PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Danny Cruz (ranked 195 p4p, 277 weight class) and Hugo Mesquita (ranked 14 p4p, 19 weight class). Cruz comes into the arena with FEEL SOMETHING blaring out of the sound system. Both these fighters are unbeaten, so somebody's 0 has got to go!I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Danny Cruz!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hugo Mesquita!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cruz takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Cruz misses with the body kick

and Mesquita counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mesquita throwing strikes but missing, from side control.
Mesquita lands some shots froms side control.
Mesquita controls the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mesquita misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cruz regains half guard there - taking advantage of Mesquita's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Mesquita not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Mesquita throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Cruz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mesquita on the ground.
Mesquita missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Mesquita wants to work for an arm triangle but Cruz is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Mesquita not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Mesquita has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mesquita is trying to control. Cruz wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Mesquita is working for a kimura but Cruz is defending it quite comfortably.
Cruz's coaches at Convicted Fight Club have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.
Mesquita wants to pass to mount but Cruz is defending the position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Mesquita thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Mesquita wants to take a breather but Cruz is having none of it.

Mesquita is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Mesquita thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Cruz's head.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Mesquita shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Cruz pinned against the cage. Cruz gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Cruz was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Mesquita looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Cruz!

Mesquita is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Cruz has escaped the position, nice work there.
Cruz is not content to let Mesquita control the position.
Mesquita postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Cruz throws an overhand right that lands on Mesquita's shoulder, as Mesquita tries to avoid the shot.
Cruz swats away the attempt to clinch by Mesquita.
Cruz throws a sloppy head kick and Mesquita moves out of range easily.
Mesquita changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Mesquita darts in and clinches Cruz up against the cage.
Cruz is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Mesquita tries to pull guard but Cruz won't allow it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mesquita jumps guard and drags Cruz to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Cruz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mesquita has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Cruz has managed to get both his arms back between Mesquita's legs - danger averted.
Hugo Mesquita has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mesquita is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Cruz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mesquita swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Cruz has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Mesquita escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cruz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Mesquita tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cruz slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Mesquita is trying to hold Cruz in close to prevent damage but Cruz has managed to pass into half guard.

Mesquita is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cruz pulls his head out easily.

Mesquita controlling the position well.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
The fighters circle momentarily. Cruz darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Mesquita on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Cruz swings for the body but Mesquita moves out of range.
Danny Cruz is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Mesquita has Cruz up against the cage in a clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Cruz obliges.
Cruz landing knees to the body.
Cruz lands a good knee to the midsection. Mesquita won't want to take too many of those.
Mesquita has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Cruz after a bit of a struggle.
Mesquita blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Cruz lands an uppercut.
Mesquita tries to pull guard but Cruz forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Danny Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hugo Mesquita.

Mesquita tightens his grip and picks Cruz up, before dumping him to the ground. Cruz manages to land in guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Cruz connects with a single shot there.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Cruz goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Cruz enables Mesquita to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Cruz manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Mesquita slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mesquita accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Mesquita stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cruz swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Mesquita throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cruz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mesquita has his takedown stuffed
and Cruz counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Cruz getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Mesquita tries for a takedown but Cruz circles away easily
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Cruz catches Mesquita with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Mesquita scores with a jab to the head.

Cruz lands a left and a right that send Mesquita crashing to the mat, dazed. Cruz thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Mesquita is rocked!
Mesquita tries for a takedown but Cruz sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Cruz jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit.
Mesquita is still on wobbly legs! Can Cruz finish him?
Danny Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hugo Mesquita.
Mesquita shoots for a takedown but Cruz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Cruz counters with a crisp right that sends Mesquita to the canvas! Cruz follows up with punches from the mount and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:26 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Danny Cruz!
