PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Marcus Alexander (ranked 589 p4p, 830 weight class) and Terrance Graves (ranked 79 p4p, 113 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 1, fighting out of New York, Marcus Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Terrance Graves!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Percy O'Donnell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Graves fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Alexander, pushing him back against the cage.
Alexander is trying to push Graves away but Graves has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Alexander blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Graves tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Graves tries to pull guard but Alexander holds him up against the cage and eventually Graves drops back down to his feet.
Graves fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Alexander breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Graves misses with a lunging right hand
and Alexander counters with a nice uppercut.
Graves throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Graves looks to land a left hand but Alexander moved out of range nicely.
Alexander throws a counter high kick but Graves was just alert enough to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Graves misses with an uppercut.
Graves throws an overhand right that lands on Alexander's shoulder, as Alexander tries to avoid the shot.
Alexander has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Graves slips a straight right by Alexander.
Graves thows a left - swing and a miss!
Graves connects with a single shot there.
Alexander misses with a left hand
and Graves counters with a slapping leg kick.

Graves ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Graves misses with a head kick.
Alexander moves out of range of the leg kick from Graves.
Graves misses with a low kick.
Alexander swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
A slapping leg kick lands for Graves.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Graves moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Graves tries to land a front kick but Alexander steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Graves looking to score a takedown here. Alexander is defending well but Graves drives through and ends up in Alexander's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Graves postures up.
Graves sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Alexander's guard.
Graves trying to control the action but Alexander is working from the bottom.

Graves thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Alexander's head.
Graves thows a huge punch but Alexander dodges it nicely.
Still in half guard, Graves seems content to control.
Alexander tries to roll over but Graves keeps him under control.
Graves is keen to just control but Alexander is a slippery customer.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Graves throws an off balance right hand
and Alexander counters with a left to the body.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Terrance Graves dominated that round.

Graves throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Alexander.

Graves throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

and Alexander cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Graves has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Graves lands with a kick to the temple. Alexander shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

This has been an exciting period of action!

and Alexander counters with a nice body kick.

Graves shoots in for a double leg but Alexander sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Graves moves in looking to clinch but Alexander pushes him off.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Alexander. Graves shrugs it off though.
Terrance Graves seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Graves shoots in for a takedown but Alexander shows good takedown defense.
Graves goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Graves tries to clinch up.

Alexander works over Graves's head and body with a nice combination.

It looks like Terrance Graves has been cut.
Graves throws a lazy head kick
and Alexander counters with a nice uppercut.
Graves throws a body kick despite being completely out of range
and Alexander counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Alexander with a nice calf kick.
Alexander blocks a head kick by Graves.
Alexander is looking to counter punch.
Graves lands a nice hook to Alexander's body. Alexander takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Marcus Alexander dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Terrance Graves's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Graves shoots in looking for a takedown. Alexander tries to sprawl out of it but Graves keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alexander manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Graves throws a big shot that misses.
Graves cracks Alexander with an open hand slap.

Graves closes the distance and clinches.
Graves tries to pull guard but Alexander holds him up against the cage and eventually Graves drops back down to his feet.

Alexander breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
A jab lands there for Graves.
Marcus Alexander has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Marcus Alexander has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Terrance Graves.

Alexander lands a really nice looking cross but Graves seems unphased.
Graves lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Alexander rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Graves counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Alexander misses with a hook. Graves ducked under it nicely.
Despite the aggression on Graves's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Graves tries to clinch up but Alexander circles away and keeps his distance.

Graves throws a head kick that lands with a deafening thwack! The crowd roars as Alexander stumbles backwards and falls to the mat. Graves follows into mount!
Terrance Graves is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Graves tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Alexander tries to hold on but Graves postures up.
Graves controlling from the full mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Let's hope that Graves has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Alexander is desperately trying to improve his position but Graves has a good base and remains in mount.
Graves controlling the position easily from mount.
Graves looking to control but Alexander is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

And that's the end of the fight!
Terrance Graves comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Graves has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
