PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Luke Neil (ranked 2529 p4p, 302 weight class) and Tomiichi Kaba (ranked 7339 p4p, 541 weight class). Neil comes into the arena with Linkin Park - In the end blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Luke Neil!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tomiichi Kaba!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kaba takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Kaba throws the left hand but Neil avoids the punch easily.

Neil looking to score a takedown here. Kaba is defending well but Neil drives through and ends up in Kaba's guard.
Kaba tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Kaba is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Neil is pushing down on Kaba's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kaba is fighting to maintain full guard but Neil has managed to sneak the leg through.
Kaba gets full guard.
Neil is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Neil seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kaba for as long as he can get away with.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kaba looking to hit a scissor sweep but Neil is one step ahead there.

Neil is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Kaba doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Neil's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Neil's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kaba is on top in guard.

Kaba seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Kaba working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Neil on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Neil tries to get out of the position.
Kaba has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Neil is proving hard to escape from.

Neil is working an open guard so Kaba takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Kaba misses with a wild body shot.
A punch combination from Neil misses.
Neil cracks Kaba with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Tomiichi Kaba is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

A solid body kick from Neil.
Luke Neil seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Neil has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Kaba.
Kaba connects with a jab.
Neil throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Neil shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kaba is trying to defend but Neil finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Kaba is looking for a sweep. Neil is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Still in half guard, Neil seems content to control.
Kaba missing with punches from the bottom.
Kaba is looking to improve his position.
Neil keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Kaba is looking to improve his position.
Kaba gets back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kaba keeping moving, preventing Neil from controlling successfully.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kaba bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Neil's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Luke Neil will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A left and a right from Neil both land. Nice combination.


It looks like Tomiichi Kaba has been cut.
Neil fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Kaba looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Neil misses with a few strikes there.
We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Kaba in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.
Kaba misses with a low kick.

Neil scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Kaba is looking to regain half guard here but Neil keeps moving and retains side control.
Neil wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kaba keeps working.
Kaba stops Neil from passing to mount.
Neil is looking to take a break and control but Kaba is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Kaba gets back to half guard.

Neil is stalling here. Kaba is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Neil seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Kaba has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Kaba has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Neil throws a right hand that Kaba ducks under and follows up with a left that Kaba also avoids with ease.
Neil throws a combination. Kaba tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Kaba takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Neil throws a series of punches but Kaba moves out of range.
We've been told by Neil's head coaches at UnderGround Training Facility that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Neil checks a low kick from Kaba.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kaba.
Kaba throws a low kick but it's checked well by Neil.
Neil swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Neil swats away the attempt to clinch by Kaba.
Kaba misses with the body kick

and Neil decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Kaba's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Neil keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Kaba's head.
Kaba is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kaba has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Rabid Dog . Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Neil stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kaba swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kaba wants to sweep but no luck.
Neil postures up.
Neil content to stall in guard here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kaba wants to land a leg kick but Neil is out of range.
Neil is looking to counter punch.
Kaba dodges the punch combination from Neil.
A low kick from Kaba misses
and Kaba takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kaba will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

Neil gets a double leg takedown into Kaba's guard.
Neil looking to sit in guard and control but Kaba gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Kaba stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Neil avoids the head kick by Kaba.

Neil scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kaba kicks off Neil and gets to his feet.
A right-left combo lands from Neil.
Neil misses with a jab, cross combination.
Kaba counters with a body kick.
Kaba misses with a body kick.
Kaba tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Kaba throws a lazy head kick
and Neil counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Kaba tries to clinch up.

Neil looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kaba slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Luke Neil dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Tomiichi Kaba's cut.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Neil throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kaba was covering up waiting for the punch and Neil finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Kaba lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Neil is looking to stand up but Kaba isn't so interested in that idea.

Kaba wants to stand and escape but instead Neil has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Kaba escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Neil gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Neil controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

You can see the frustration on Kaba's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Tomiichi Kaba has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kaba tries to improve position but can't.

And that's the end of the fight!
Luke Neil showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Neil has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
