Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nicklas Akerman (ranked 1238 p4p, 709 weight class) and Kobayashi Maru (ranked 141 p4p, 83 weight class). Kobayashi Maru acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Kobayashi Maru!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Frank Dennis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maru jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Akerman fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

and Maru counters with a three punch combo that has Akerman backing up. Akerman nods at Maru to acknowledge the strikes.

Akerman closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Maru quickly recovers to half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Akerman is looking for a kimura here.

Akerman is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Maru doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Akerman.
Maru really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Akerman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Akerman dives in for a single leg takedown but Maru sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Akerman is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
We've been hearing good reports from Akerman's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Nicklas Akerman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maru throws out a powerful jab.
Akerman looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Oooooh!!! Maru has knocked Akerman down with a huge combo! Maru steps away and waves a wobbly Akerman back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!

Kobayashi Maru showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action!

Maru sends Akerman crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Maru is motioning to the referee to let Akerman up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Oh Akerman is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Akerman shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Maru as he avoids it easily.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Maru - that will leave a mark!
Akerman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Akerman shoots in looking for a takedown but Maru manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Akerman's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Akerman is holding his hands too far apart here. Maru throws a hard, straight punch right down the pipe and BOOM! Akerman is out! That punch landed square on the jaw - what a shot!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:26 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Kobayashi Maru! Kobayashi Maru retains his lightweight title!
After winning the bout, Kobayashi Maru thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
The defeated Nicklas Akerman had this to say: 'My opponent is a great champion! Tonight he was the better fighter. I hope we get to train together in the future!'.
