PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Danny Dawkins (ranked 107 p4p, 371 weight class) and Paul Hunter (ranked 19 p4p, 52 weight class). Dawkins comes to the cage accompanied by Hawaii Five-O. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Danny Dawkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paul Hunter!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Gwen Towbar and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Dawkins throws a looping overhand right but Hunter ducks down to avoid it.
Hunter doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Dawkins misses with a body punch
and Hunter counters with a lovely straight right hand!

It looks like Danny Dawkins has been cut.
Dawkins dips to his left and cracks Hunter with an uppercut!

It looks like Paul Hunter has been cut.
Dawkins swats away the attempt to clinch by Hunter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters circling - Hunter throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Dawkins looks to throw the jab but Hunter is out of range.
Hunter throws a counter combo.

and Hunter counters with a straight right hand.

Dawkins feints and as Hunter raises his hands in defense, Dawkins changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Dawkins connects with a couple of short punches.
Hunter controls Dawkins momentarily but Dawkins frees himself.
Dawkins is in close to Hunter's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hunter looking to hit a scissor sweep but Dawkins is one step ahead there.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hunter is on top in guard.

Hunter is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Hunter got a little sloppy there for a moment and Dawkins has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hunter has managed to get both his arms back between Dawkins's legs - danger averted.
Dawkins controls Hunter momentarily but Hunter frees himself.

Dawkins is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hunter is aware though and is defending well.
Dawkins wants to sweep here but Hunter controlling him for the moment.
Dawkins wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Hunter is now in half guard.
Dawkins is looking to improve his position.

Hunter perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Dawkins is trying to maintain the position but Hunter is very close to passing his half guard.
Well, if Hunter is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Dawkins is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hunter sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Dawkins wants to sweep but no luck.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Dawkins has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Hunter has passed into side control.
Dawkins is looking to regain half guard here but Hunter keeps moving and retains side control.

That was a close round but I would say that Danny Dawkins will probably get the nod.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

As Dawkins backs off Hunter throws a huge counter combo but Dawkins manages to avoid it all.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hunter trying to keep a closed guard but Dawkins is proving a slippery customer.

Dawkins working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hunter doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hunter manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Hunter in particular looking to stall.

Dawkins escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hunter gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Dawkins wants to control the position but Hunter says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Dawkins is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Hunter pulls his head out easily.

That was a close second round but I would say that Danny Dawkins will probably get the nod.

That's time! Dawkins's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Dawkins is looking to wear down Hunter with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Dawkins lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Dawkins looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Hunter is looking for the big counter here.
Dawkins swings widly with a right hand
and Hunter counters with a body kick.
Dawkins closes the distance and clinches up with Hunter, looking for a takedown. Dawkins pushes Hunter against the cage but Hunter circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Hunter tries to counter with a clinch but Dawkins shakes him off and moves away.
Dawkins fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Hunter on the side of the head.

Dawkins lands a really nice looking cross but Hunter seems unphased.

A kick lands to the mid section there for Hunter.
Dawkins cracks Hunter with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Hunter scoring well with a low kick there.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Dawkins throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Hunter tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Dawkins is in Hunter's guard.

Dawkins throwing strikes but missing.
Hunter is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Dawkins is trying to get back to full guard.
Dawkins trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Hunter manages to pass to mount!
Dawkins is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Dawkins is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Hunter is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Dawkins is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Dawkins manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Dawkins is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Danny Dawkins.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Dawkins, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
