PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Finlay Standifer (ranked 429 p4p, 1280 weight class) and Tommy Vercetti (ranked 56 p4p, 147 weight class). Vercetti comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Vice City kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Finlay Standifer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tommy Vercetti!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Standifer lands a lovely overhand right.
Vercetti throws a shot from downtown. Standifer moves away and avoids it.
Vercetti takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
We've been hearing reports that Standifer has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Vercetti is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Standifer.
Vercetti throws out a loose jab but Standifer uses good head movement to avoid it.
Vercetti throws a lazy right hand but Standifer sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Nice defenses there by Standifer.
Vercetti has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

enabling Vercetti to counter with a crisp jab.
Standifer on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Vercetti bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Standifer's head backwards.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Tommy Vercetti seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vercetti fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Standifer on the side of the head.
Vercetti throws out a loose jab but Standifer uses good head movement to avoid it.
Vercetti misses with a hook.
Vercetti throws a hook to the side of Standifer's head but Standifer sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Standifer decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Standifer is keen to just control but Vercetti is a slippery customer.

Standifer throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Standifer throwing shots but Vercetti is blocking nicely.
Standifer is trying to control the action in half guard but Vercetti is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Vercetti preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Standifer is looking to stall here but Vercetti recovers full guard.
Standifer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Vercetti works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Standifer throwing strikes from guard but Vercetti blocks nicely.
Vercetti has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Standifer lands a couple of elbows.
Standifer looking to sit in guard and control but Vercetti gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vercetti seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Vercetti avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Standifer tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Vercetti is sitting in close to Standifer's body. Standifer has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Vercetti is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Vercetti is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Standifer.
