PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between JD Drake (ranked 245 p4p, 469 weight class) and Don Cortez (ranked 16 p4p, 30 weight class). Drake comes to the cage accompanied by Born in the USA by - Bruce Springstein. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, JD Drake!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Don Cortez!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, William Peck and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Drake gets caught napping as Cortez dives in and scores a takedown. Drake manages to retain guard.
Cortez is standing up over Drake. Drake looks to escape but Cortez dives into side control.

Drake is pushing Cortez's head away, looking to escape. Cortez manages to hold on to the position though.
Cortez is looking to take a break and control but Drake is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Drake struggling a bit here.
Cortez content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Drake tries to improve position but can't.
Drake is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
You can see the frustration on Drake's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Drake pushes Cortez away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Cortez gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Cortez wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Drake, who protects the arm well.
Drake tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Cortez looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Drake is avoiding damage well.
Drake knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cortez on the ground.
Drake is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Cortez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Drake keeps working.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Cortez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cortez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Drake tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

Drake tries to lock up and control but Cortez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Drake is desperately trying to improve his position but Cortez has a good base and remains in mount.

Cortez has hold of Drake's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Drake manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Cortez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cortez is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Drake can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Drake wants to hold on but Cortez pushes him away.

Cortez is landing with some decent strikes but Drake is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Don Cortez dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Cortez digs a good body shot into Drake's ribs.
Drake avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Cortez scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

It looks like JD Drake has been cut.

and Drake counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Cortez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Cortez lands a lovely overhand right.
We've been told by Drake's head coaches at Sprawl N Brawl that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Cortez paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Cortez scores with a punch to the head.
Cortez fails with a takedown attempt.
It looked like Drake was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Cortez.
Cortez throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
It looked like Drake was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cortez wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
JD Drake is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Cortez loads up on a big right hand but Drake slips the punch.
Drake throwing a counter right hand but Cortez manages to avoid it.
Cortez connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Drake momentarily.
Drake takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Cortez!
Cortez darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Cortez clobbers Drake with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Cortez misses with a hook. Drake ducked under it nicely.

and Drake counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
JD Drake has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Don Cortez.
Cortez shoots in and drives through. Drake sprawls well.
Drake appears to be looking for a big counter.

Cortez keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Cortez scores with a sloppy right hand. Drake should have avoided that one.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cortez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Drake moves away.
A decent looking cross lands there for Cortez.

and Drake counters with a crisp one two that drops Cortez! Drake thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Cortez to his feet! Cortez is in big trouble!

A quick step to the side and Drake tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
JD Drake is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cortez throws a combination. Drake tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Don Cortez seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Cortez shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Cortez throws a right and a left that Drake avoids nicely.
Cortez throws a series of punches but Drake avoids them all with ease.
Drake went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.

Cortez misses with a series of wild punches.
The fighters circling - Cortez throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Cortez looks to land a left hand but Drake moved out of range nicely.
As Cortez looks to move away, Drake throws a big counter combo but Cortez just gets out of the way.
Cortez slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Cortez misses the shot to the body.
Drake takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Drake takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Cortez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Drake circles away quickly and effectively.

Drake gets caught napping as Cortez dives in and scores a takedown. Drake manages to retain guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Drake is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Drake on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Drake tries to get out of the position.
Drake wants to stand up but Cortez is controlling him.
Cortez stays in close to Drake's body and controls the position.
Let's hope that Cortez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Cortez trying to control the position from guard on top but Drake is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Cortez lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Cortez is pushing down on Drake's leg trying to pass to half guard. Drake is fighting to maintain full guard but Cortez has managed to sneak the leg through.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Drake is pushing off trying to get to his feet. Cortez has hold of the leg though and he's dropped back for a heel hook… has he got it?? YES! Drake is tapping! This fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Heel Hook). Don Cortez!
Don Cortez is the new super heavyweight champion!
Don Cortez decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
JD Drake was interviewed post fight and said 'It's Miller Time'.
