Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Morello Hawthorne (ranked 721 p4p, 1744 weight class) and Hugo Mesquita (ranked 55 p4p, 119 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Morello Hawthorne!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hugo Mesquita!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Arvi Lind and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mesquita wants to clinch but Hawthorne slips to the side

and Hawthorne decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mesquita's guard.

Mesquita working for a triangle but Hawthorne defends it easily.

Hawthorne is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mesquita is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Mesquita had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hawthorne defends it easily.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mesquita tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Mesquita has his foot on Hawthorne's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hawthorne works his way back into a safe position though.

Hawthorne is looking to take a break and control but Mesquita is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Hawthorne is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Mesquita is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Mesquita loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Hawthorne scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Mesquita land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Mesquita stands and salutes the crowd.
