PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Frank Diaz (ranked 983 p4p, 995 weight class) and Aleks Nik (ranked 134 p4p, 137 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Diaz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Aleks Nik!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Radbod Blank and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz shoots in but Nik avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Nik throws out a counter right but Diaz avoids it with no problem.
Nice uppercut lands for Diaz. That snapped Nik's head back.
Diaz shoots in for a double leg but Nik sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Diaz has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The Rubber Guard Emporium in the buildup to the fight.
Nik walks into a straight right hand from Diaz.
A telegraphed right hand from Diaz misses the target.
Nik looks to land a right hand but Diaz moved out of range.
Diaz slips a straight right by Nik.
Diaz throws out a loose jab but Nik uses good head movement to avoid it.
Diaz moves in looking to clinch but Nik pushes him off.
Diaz takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

It looks like Frank Diaz has been cut.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nik gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Nik is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Let's hope that Nik has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Diaz is on top in guard.


Diaz drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nik looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nik looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nik!

Diaz is not content to let Nik control the position.
Diaz gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Diaz is trying to get back to full guard.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Nik looks to land a right hand but Diaz moved out of range.

Nik is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Diaz takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Nik throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Diaz bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Nik's head.

Nik leaves Diaz with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Diaz tries to close the distance and clinch up but Nik swats him away and circles back towards the center.

A jab from Diaz finds it's way through Nik's defenses.
Horrible takedown attempt by Diaz or perhaps it was just good defense by Nik, which made it look bad.

Diaz tries to score a power double leg takedown but Nik sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Diaz somewhat.
Diaz shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nik but Nik pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Diaz changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nik tries to avoid it but Diaz manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nik to the ground. Nik escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Diaz's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Nik connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Diaz scrambles back to his feet.
Diaz takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Nik uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Diaz.
It seemed like Nik was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Diaz lands the left hand.
Diaz is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Diaz throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Nik's waist but Nik gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Diaz off to one side.

Nik tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Diaz manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Nik fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Diaz goes for a double leg but Nik avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Nik continues to drive forward.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Nik swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Diaz tightens his grip and picks Nik up, before dumping him to the ground. Nik manages to land in guard.
Nik seems keen to control Diaz's posture.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nik lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Nik distracts Diaz with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Diaz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nik gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Diaz is pulling down on Nik's head. It's preventing any offense from Nik, at least for the moment.
Nik lands a couple of elbows.
Nik connects with a couple of short punches.

Nik content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Diaz has locked up a guillotine! Diaz's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Nik is holding on here and Diaz must be using up a lot of energy. Nik has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Diaz gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Frank Diaz!
Frank Diaz took his opportunity to call for a title shot in his post fight interview.
