Colby wants to stand but Slaughter is controlling the position. Slaughter trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. We've been hearing good reports from Slaughter's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. #TD# Colby looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Mendoza! Colby prevents Mendoza from escaping the position. The ground and pound from Colby seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Mendoza takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Colby lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Mendoza down.

Colby throwing shots but missing, from side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! Colby looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Colby lands a big shot there that rocks Mendoza but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mendoza can do anything to dispel that myth. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Colby cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Gadzhiyev tries to land a sweep but no joy. Gadzhiyev told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Colby throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Colby trying to control the position from guard on top but Gadzhiyev is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Colby controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Gadzhiyev trying to control the position.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Colby, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. #R1# Rainey takes a swing at Colby's ribcage but misses. Colby shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rainey as he jumps to the side. Colby changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rainey tries to avoid it but Colby manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rainey to the ground. Rainey escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Colby misses with a takedown and Rainey counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Colby thinking. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Colby. That's going to take a lot out of him. Colby closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rainey circles away. Colby shoots and misses and Rainey counters with a stiff right hand. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Colby. Colby misses with a takedown and Rainey counters with a one-two to the body. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Colby is trying hard to land a takedown here. Rainey sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Colby tries to clinch but fails miserably and Rainey counters with a stiff right hand. Nice sprawl there from Rainey as Colby shoots in. Colby doesn't succeed with the takedown letting Rainey counter with a right hand. Rainey has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Colby shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rainey as he jumps to the side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Colby. That's going to take a lot out of him. Colby tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Rainey defends well and Colby ends up having to push Rainey into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Rainey swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Rainey tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Colby's elbow. Rainey misses with a body punch.

Rainey smells blood - he's punishing Colby with more strikes and the ref has stopped it! Colby has no idea where he is - he's tackled the ref... oh dear, poor guy, the crowd is in hysterics!

Colby is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Colby seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground.
