PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rolando Barry (ranked 4686 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mitchi Balli (ranked 4592 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rolando Barry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mitchi Balli!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Balli clinches.

Barry breaks from the clinch.

Barry gets a takedown into half guard.

Balli makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Balli shoots in and bounces Barry off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Barry is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Barry has his foot on Balli's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Balli works his way back into a safe position though.
Barry is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Balli tries to roll over but Barry keeps him under control.
Balli trying to get back to full guard but Barry takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Balli tries to lock up and control but Barry gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Barry landing strikes, looking to finish!
The referee warns Balli that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Balli is trying to escape the mount.
A nice elbow there by Barry.
Balli swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Barry is landing with some decent strikes but Balli is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Balli is trying desperately to improve position.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Balli is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Balli is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Barry won't let Balli get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Barry fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Barry connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Balli keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Balli regains half guard.
Barry lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Balli is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Barry pulls his head out easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Barry moves out of range of the body kick from Balli.
A right-left combo lands from Balli.


It looks like Rolando Barry has been cut.
Mitchi Balli seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Balli shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Barry kicks off Balli and gets to his feet.
Barry could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
A head kick misses from Balli.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Nice jab there from Balli.

Balli bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Barry's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Rolando Barry overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Barry is looking for a sweep.
Barry has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Balli decides to stand back up. Balli steps back and let's Barry get back to his feet.
Balli fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Balli forces Barry back against the cage and clinches.
Barry is stalling here.
Balli tries to circle away but Barry has him pinned against the cage.
Balli tries to break the clinch but Barry is controlling the position.
Barry keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Balli's efforts to push away.

Barry pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Balli gets a double leg takedown into Barry's guard.
Balli looking to sit in guard and control but Barry gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Barry lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Balli has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Barry has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Barry breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Balli scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Balli dives in and scores a takedown into Barry's guard.
Balli is breathing heavily.
Barry is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Barry seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Barry working over Balli with some ground and pound. Balli looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Barry slips a nice elbow through Balli's hands, connecting with Balli's forehead.
Barry throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Balli tries to kick Barry off but Barry keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barry scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mitchi Balli showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Barry tries to score a power double leg takedown but Balli sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Barry somewhat.

Balli closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Barry might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Balli wants to stand but Barry has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Balli wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Barry uses the opportunity to regain full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Balli shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Barry napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Balli takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Barry is trying to get back to half guard.
Barry is working hard here to advance position.

Balli decides to stand back up. Balli steps back and let's Barry get back to his feet.

Balli drives through with a takedown into Barry's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Balli seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Balli must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Balli wants to control from the top but Barry keeps moving.

Barry is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Balli gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Balli lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Barry is defended easily by Balli.
Balli scores with the left hand. Barry knows he should have avoided that one.
Mitchi Balli seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Balli shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Balli controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Mitchi Balli comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Balli has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
