PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donn Vargas (ranked 23840 p4p, 0 weight class) and Knight Thunder (ranked 5074 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Donn Vargas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Knight Thunder!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thunder closes this distance looking for a takedown but Vargas circles away.

Vargas shoots in and bounces Thunder off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Vargas slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Thunder is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Thunder tries to strike from the bottom.
Thunder looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Vargas stays in close to Thunder's body and controls the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Thunder bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vargas's guard.

Vargas will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Vargas working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Thunder has passed into half guard!

Thunder seems to be working for a kimura but Vargas defends the submission attempt.

Thunder prevents Vargas from getting back to his feet.

Thunder keeps trying to improve his position.
Thunder lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Thunder wants to pass the guard but Vargas is keeping the position.

Thunder postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Vargas is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Thunder, into his guard.

Thunder has Vargas pulled in close to control his posture.
Vargas cracks Thunder with a solid left hand.
Thunder trying to control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Vargas wants to control from the top but Thunder keeps moving.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nice sprawl there from Vargas as Thunder shoots in.
Thunder shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Vargas defends it nicely.
Vargas is looking to counter with head kicks.
Donn Vargas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Knight Thunder.

Thunder changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Vargas tries to avoid it but Thunder manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Vargas to the ground. Vargas escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Thunder displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Vargas.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Vargas is defended easily by Thunder.

That was a close round but I would say that Donn Vargas will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Thunder moves into the clinch.
Thunder creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Vargas's defenses.


It looks like Donn Vargas has been cut.
Thunder jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Vargas walks away with a smile on his face. Thunder gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Thunder throws a head kick that misses
and Vargas counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Thunder keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Thunder has managed to clinch.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Thunder.

Thunder misses with an elbow over the top.
Vargas misses with a punch to the body.
Thunder has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Vargas goes for a takedown in the clinch but Thunder prevents it.
Thunder tries to pull guard but Vargas forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Vargas goes for a takedown attempt but Thunder pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Donn Vargas. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Thunder looks for a takedown but Vargas sprawls well.
Vargas will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Thunder is looking to clinch but Vargas is avoiding it.

and Vargas counters with a one-two to the body.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Vargas.
Thunder tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Vargas looks for a takedown but Thunder sprawls well.
Thunder is looking for the big counter here.
Vargas displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Thunder.
As Thunder tries to get set, Vargas tries to push him back and clinch up but Thunder manages to avoid the attempt.

Thunder escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Thunder lands an uppercut.
Thunder working hard to break the clinch.

Thunder pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Vargas leaves Thunder with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Thunder is breathing heavily.
Thunder fails to land the takedown.
Vargas seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Thunder shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Vargas as he jumps to the side.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Vargas fails with a takedown attempt.
Thunder keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Thunder tries to sprawl but Vargas drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Thunder is trying to escape back to his feet but Vargas uses the scramble to pass into side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vargas happy to just control the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Knight Thunder showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Thunder takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Thunder shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Vargas counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Thunder is lucky that one didn't land flush.

Vargas feints and as Thunder raises his hands in defense, Vargas changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Vargas controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Vargas seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Thunder for as long as he can get away with.

and Vargas counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Thunder tries a knee to the head but Vargas blocks it.

Thunder with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Thunder on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Thunder prevents the takedown attempt.
A body shot lands from Vargas.
Vargas lands a shot to the body.
Vargas tries for a takedown but Thunder manages to get underhooks.
Vargas drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Thunder gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Thunder manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Vargas has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Thunder trying to keep a closed guard but Vargas is proving a slippery customer.
Thunder should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
