PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Julian Gniewek (ranked 3590 p4p, 379 weight class) and Peter Heart (ranked 3023 p4p, 336 weight class). Heart has chosen Eric Church - Record Year as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Julian Gniewek!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Peter Heart!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Tarja Halkonen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Heart misses with a straight right.
Heart thows a left - swing and a miss!
Jab by Heart.
Heart thuds his right hand into Gniewek's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Gniewek has been working on his boxing with his coaches at mickeyharts the greatest in the buildup to the fight.
Gniewek lands a leg kick that knocks Heart off balance momentarily.
Heart throws a lazy right hand but Gniewek sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Heart's corner calls for a 1-2. Heart obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Gniewek tries to move into range but Heart moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Heart throws a jab when Gniewek was well out of range.
Gniewek buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Heart misses with a looping right.
Gniewek appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
Gniewek looks to land a right hand but Heart moved out of range.

Gniewek rushes Heart and presses him up against the ropes.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Knees to the body from Gniewek.
Nice body punch from Gniewek.
Gniewek tries to pull guard but Heart forces him back to his feet, against the ropes.

Heart wants the takedown. Gniewek is fighting it off but Heart persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Gniewek's guard against the ropes.
Heart throwing strikes from guard but Gniewek blocks nicely.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Gniewek had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Heart defends it easily.
Heart trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Gniewek pulls Heart in close to his closed guard and prevents Heart from doing any damage or advancing position.
Heart must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Heart tries to free his leg and advance position but Gniewek is retaining full guard.
Heart with a flurry of punches that miss.
Gniewek working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Heart.
Heart lands a couple of elbows.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Heart trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Heart postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Gniewek is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Heart felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Gniewek is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Heart doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Gniewek.
Gniewek stalling away here and it's allowed Heart to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Gniewek wants to control from the top but Heart keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Heart dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Heart keeps the fight on the outside.
Gniewek bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Heart throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Gniewek throws an off balance right hand
and Heart cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Gniewek fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Heart.
Jab, jab by Gniewek - just one landing.
Gniewek blocks a jab.
Gniewek looks for the body kick but Heart saw that one coming.
Gniewek uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Heart.
Gniewek delivers a nice body kick.
Gniewek avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Gniewek tries to counter by clinching up but Heart breaks away and moves out of range.
Gniewek misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A jab from Heart does it's job there.
Heart feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Gnieweks jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Heart misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gniewek.
Gniewek tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Heart waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Gniewek.
No joy there for Heart, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Gniewek throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Heart looks to land a right hand but Gniewek moved out of range.
Gniewek lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
A chopping leg kick lands by Gniewek.
Gniewek throws a leg kick which misses Heart's front leg but catches the back leg as Heart tries to avoid it.
Heart throws a shot from downtown. Gniewek moves away and avoids it.
Peter Heart seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Gniewek wants to clinch but Heart slips to the side
and Heart connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Gniewek digs a good hook to Heart's body.
Heart rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Gniewek counters with a good low kick that Heart was not able to check.
A telegraphed right hand from Heart misses the target.
Gniewek feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Gniewek turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Gniewek.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gniewek lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Gniewek looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Heart throws a lazy right hand but Gniewek sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Gniewek staying out of range there.
Heart wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Gniewek is looking to clinch but Heart is avoiding it.
Gniewek tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Heart is able to avoid easily.
Heart throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Gniewek tries to counter by clinching up but Heart breaks away and moves out of range.
Gniewek uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Heart.
A big left from Heart misses.
Heart throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Gniewek takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Good shot there by Heart.
Heart works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Heart scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Gniewek uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Heart.
Gniewek uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Heart.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Heart showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Gniewek feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Heart's calf.
A solid leg kick lands there for Gniewek.
Heart checks a leg kick.
Heart throws a jab but it's blocked by Gniewek.
Julian Gniewek has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gniewek ducks under a wild hook from Heart.
Heart's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
Heart misses with a straight right.
Gniewek misses with the body kick
and Heart counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Heart connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Heart might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Gniewek fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Heart, pushing him back against the ropes.
Gniewek throws a knee to the head but misses.
Gniewek connects with a nasty looking knee right to Heart's face.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gniewek with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.

Heart manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Gniewek tries to free his leg and advance position but Heart is retaining full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gniewek trying to control the position from guard on top but Heart is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gniewek postures up in Heart's guard and throws a big left but Heart blocks it.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Gniewek drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Heart dives on top into guard.

Heart looking to sit in guard and control but Gniewek gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gniewek drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Heart manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gniewek has Heart in his guard.

Heart is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Gniewek has his foot on Heart's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Heart works his way back into a safe position though.

Heart chips away with some ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
Julian Gniewek showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Heart has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

In his post fight interview, Peter Heart started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
