PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Abel Steele (ranked 7441 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ed Ricoop (ranked 25439 p4p, 0 weight class). Ricoop is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Bad to the Bone. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Abel Steele!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ed Ricoop!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Josh West and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Steele tries to keep at a distance but Ricoop has taken the fight into the clinch.

Ricoop has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Steele uses from the top position.
Steele trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Steele really is a fat lump.
Ricoop is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Steele wanted to stand there but Ricoop had control of the position.

Ricoop looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Steele sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Steele missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Steele is looking to stand up but Ricoop won't let him.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Steele gets a clinch.
Ricoop trying to stall but Steele improves his position.
Ricoop looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ricoop misses with a knee to the head.
Steele fails to pull guard.
Steele drops down looking for an ankle pick but Ricoop pulls his leg out and moves away.

Steele closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Steele ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Steele no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Steele looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Ricoop is working Steele over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Steele looking to hit a scissor sweep but Ricoop is one step ahead there.
Ricoop wants to pass the guard but Steele is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ricoop lands a couple of elbows.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ricoop is pushing down on Steele's leg trying to pass to half guard. Steele is fighting to maintain full guard but Ricoop has managed to sneak the leg through.
Ricoop seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Ricoop is keen to just control but Steele is a slippery customer.
Ricoop looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Steele is trying to get back to full guard.
Ricoop slips a nice elbow through Steele's hands, connecting with Steele's forehead.
Ricoop is nestled in close to Steele, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Steele tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Steele is trying to get back to full guard.
Ricoop is looking to stall here but Steele recovers full guard.
Steele looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ricoop trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ed Ricoop dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Steele closes the distance and clinches up with Ricoop, looking for a takedown. Steele pushes Ricoop against the cage but Ricoop circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Steele misses with a takedown

and Ricoop counters with a crisp one two that drops Steele! Ricoop thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Steele to his feet! Steele is in big trouble!


Steele is rocked!

Ricoop lands a huge takedown. Steele is out but the ref is slow to react and Ricoop lands 3 more undefended punches before the fight is stopped. Brutal finish. Steele lies on the canvas for a good minute before the doctors bring him round. Good to see he's OK.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:21 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ed Ricoop!
An out of breath Ed Ricoop thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
