PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rick Roll (ranked 5189 p4p, 535 weight class) and Banana Man (ranked 24102 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Rick Roll!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Banana Man!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, James Atkins and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Roll enables Man to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Roll manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Man drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Man jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Man pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Roll is keeping the position for now.
Man must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Roll lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roll connects with a couple of short punches.
Man keeping moving, preventing Roll from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Roll tries to free his leg and advance position but Man is retaining full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roll wants to control from the top but Man keeps moving.

Man is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Roll is aware though and is defending well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Roll postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Roll wants to control from the top but Man keeps moving.
Roll wants to pass the guard but Man is keeping the position.
Roll won't allow Man to sweep him here.
Roll throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Man works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Man can do anything to dispel that myth.
Roll trying to control the position from guard on top but Man is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Man has Roll pulled in close to control his posture.
Roll wants to pass the guard but Man is keeping the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Man has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Roll can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Man tries for a takedown but Roll sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Roll shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Man pinned against the cage. Man gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Man tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Man darts in looking for a takedown but Roll gets double underhooks and turns Man into the cage.
Roll tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Man swivels and escapes.
Roll throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Roll misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rick Roll. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Roll doesn't manage to clinch there - Man circles away.

Man drives through with a takedown into Roll's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Man stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Roll swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Man thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Man slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Man postures up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Man shoots in but Roll avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Roll shoots for a takedown but Man saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Man goes for a double leg but Roll avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Roll continues to drive forward.
Roll appears to be looking for a big counter.
Roll shoots in for a takedown but Man shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Man feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Man controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Roll is looking for a triangle but Man pushes his legs off easily.
Roll is breathing heavily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Roll can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Man controls the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Banana Man will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Man shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Roll's guard.

Man wants to pass the guard but Roll is keeping the position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Roll not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Man throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Roll's waist but Roll gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Man off to one side.

Roll gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Man postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Roll is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Man, into his guard.

Roll slips nicely into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Man looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Roll prevents Man from improving his position.
Roll is keen to just control but Man is a slippery customer.

Roll is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Man sees it coming and defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Roll is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Man has managed to free his arm - good work.
Man tries to roll over but Roll keeps him under control.
Roll is keen to just control but Man is a slippery customer.
Roll trying to pass the guard but Man defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Roll is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Man doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Roll.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Man is positioning himself well to prevent Roll advancing to mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Rick Roll will probably get the nod.
That's time! Roll's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Man shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Roll has his foot on Man's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Man works his way back into a safe position though.

Man's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Roll fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Man fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Roll to the ground. Man is now in Roll's guard.
Man not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Man trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Roll throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Man controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
More stalling from Man.
Roll controls Man momentarily but Man frees himself.
Man is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Man has gone for a leg lock! Roll slips out almost immediately though and dives into Man's guard.


Roll avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Roll wants to control from the top but Man keeps moving.

Man isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Roll stacks Man on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Roll!
Man can't do much from the bottom here.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Banana Man.
I think Man has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
