PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Walter Shield (ranked 8201 p4p, 775 weight class) and Dan Thatcher (ranked 4731 p4p, 600 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Walter Shield!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dan Thatcher!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Steven Brown and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Shield.

Shield changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Thatcher looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Shield tries to stand but Thatcher controls the position and pulls Shield into his guard.
Thatcher preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Shield throwing strikes but missing.
Shield wants to pass the guard but Thatcher is keeping the position.
Shield pushes down on Thatcher's leg and manages to get into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shield seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Shield is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Thatcher wants to control but Shield is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Thatcher tries to roll over but Shield keeps him under control.
Shield wants to get back to his feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shield looks to land a strike but Thatcher avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shield is looking to work some ground and pound but Thatcher has wrist control.

Thatcher is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shield is aware though and is defending well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Shield fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Thatcher to the ground. Shield is now in Thatcher's guard.
Shield is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Shield wanted to stand there but Thatcher had control of the position.
Shield trying to control the position from guard on top but Thatcher is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shield wants to get up but he can't break Thatcher's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Thatcher had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shield defends it easily.

Thatcher working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shield doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shield manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Shield drives through with a takedown into Thatcher's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Thatcher escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Shield gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Shield is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Thatcher can do to turn this around?

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Shield clinches up with Thatcher and pushes him back against the cage.

Shield has Thatcher pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Shield pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Thatcher tumbling to the mat - Shield dives into Thatcher's guard.
Shield is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Thatcher has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Shield is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Thatcher.

That's time! Shield's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Shield misses with a leg kick

and Thatcher counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Shield is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Shield is looking for a triangle but Thatcher pushes his legs off easily.
Shield wants to stand and escape but Thatcher is having none of it.

Thatcher has gone for a leg lock! Shield slips out almost immediately though and dives into Thatcher's guard.

Thatcher is trying to keep Shield in close.
Shield wants to control from the top but Thatcher keeps moving.
Thatcher takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Shield got a little sloppy there for a moment and Thatcher has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shield has managed to get both his arms back between Thatcher's legs - danger averted.

Shield tries to stand and escape but Thatcher is controlling the position.

Walter Shield overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Shield is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Thatcher is just riding it out for now. Shield eventually gives up the hold.

Walter Shield is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Shield tries to pass the half guard into mount. Thatcher knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Walter Shield showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Shield has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
