The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Daniel Cesar and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Arona scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Arona tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Freitas is looking for a sweep.

Arona wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Freitas, who protects the arm well.
Arona works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Arona thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Arona has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Freitas gets back to half guard.

Arona is trying to work for a kimura but Freitas is defending well.
Arona has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Arona takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Arona goes for an armbar but Freitas turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Freitas.

Arona looking to hit a scissor sweep but Freitas is one step ahead there.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Freitas wants to pass the guard but Arona is keeping the position.
Freitas must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Freitas drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Arona can't do much from the bottom here.

Arona wants to control but Freitas postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Arona has taken the fight to the clinch.

Freitas has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Arona uses from the top position.
