PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Pennilla (ranked 4277 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Evans (ranked 5868 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Chuck Pennilla!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ben Evans!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Evans leaves Pennilla with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Pennilla closes the distance and clinches up with Evans, looking for a takedown. Pennilla pushes Evans against the cage but Evans circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Evans fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pennilla, pushing him back against the cage.
Evans is trying to pull guard but Pennilla turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Evans tries to pull guard but Pennilla forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Pennilla jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Evans walks away with a smile on his face. Pennilla gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chuck Pennilla. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Left hook, right uppercut from Pennilla.


It looks like Ben Evans has been cut.
Evans shoots in and drives through. Pennilla sprawls well.
Nice takedown defense from Pennilla. No joy for Evans on that attempt.
Pennilla is looking to counter with head kicks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pennilla doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Evans holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Pennilla throws a knee to the head but misses.

Evans is working an open guard so Pennilla takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Pennilla tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Evans manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Evans takes a swing at Pennilla's ribcage but misses.

Evans rushes Pennilla and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Pennilla can't break the clinch.
Pennilla fails to pull guard.
Evans prevents a takedown attempt there.
Pennilla wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Evans is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Pennilla to keep the fight standing.
Evans tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Pennilla drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Evans gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Pennilla is looking to control Evans's arms but Evans gets an underhook and turns him. Now Pennilla has his back to the cage.

Pennilla goes for a takedown attempt but Evans pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Pennilla closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Pennilla is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Pennilla escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Evans fails with a takedown attempt.
Evans shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pennilla as he avoids it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Evans shoots in looking for a takedown. Pennilla tries to sprawl out of it but Evans keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pennilla manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Pennilla closes the distance and clinches.

Evans pulls guard successfully.

Pennilla gets to his feet - Evans follows without any prompting.
Pennilla closes this distance looking for a takedown but Evans circles away.
Pennilla tries to clinch
and Evans counters with a stiff right hand.
Pennilla shoots and misses

and Evans counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Evans.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pennilla.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Let's hope that Evans has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Pennilla misses with a jab, cross combination.
Evans drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Pennilla defends it well.
Evans shoots for a double leg takedown but Pennilla sprawls well. He's pushed Evans's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Evans has closed the distance and engaged Pennilla in a clinch.
Pennilla is working for takedown but Evans is calmly controlling the position for now.

Evans ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Evans no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Pennilla is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Evans is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Pennilla wants to control the pace but Evans is squirming around nicely.
Pennilla breaks from Evans's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Pennilla wants to lay and pray for a moment but Evans keeps working.

Pennilla is pressing down on Evans's thigh, looking to free his foot. Evans is holding on for now.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pennilla connects with a nice short shot to Evans's temple.

Pennilla wants to work for an arm triangle but Evans is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Chuck Pennilla overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Evans slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Evans working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pennilla doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pennilla manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Pennilla gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Evans.
Pennilla tries to clinch there but Evans circles away.
Evans appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.

Pennilla feints and as Evans raises his hands in defense, Pennilla changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Evans misses with a takedown attempt - Pennilla sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Pennilla tries to pull guard but Evans won't allow it.

Pennilla is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
