PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Johny Vargas (ranked 2929 p4p, 337 weight class) and Frank Smith (ranked 18844 p4p, 698 weight class). Vargas kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Drake - Trophies. Frank Smith has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Frank Smith!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Wagner Zegers and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vargas closes the distance looking to clinch
and Smith counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Johny Vargas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vargas throws an overhand right that lands on Smith's shoulder, as Smith tries to avoid the shot.

Vargas gets underhooks to prevent Smith's takedown attempt.
Vargas is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Smith is defending well for now.

It looks like Frank Smith has been cut.

Vargas stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Vargas tries to close the distance and clinch up but Smith swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Vargas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smith's waist but Smith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vargas off to one side.

Smith tries to clinch but Vargas is having none of it.
Vargas's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Vargas duly obliges.
Vargas rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Smith moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Vargas looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Vargas tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Vargas manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

and Smith counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown but Vargas manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smith's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Vargas tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Smith defends well and Vargas ends up having to push Smith into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
A nice side step and Smith releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vargas has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Smith is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

It seemed like Smith was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Vargas shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Smith! But no joy.
A nice combination there by Vargas.

Smith lands a nice hook to Vargas's body. Vargas takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Vargas but Vargas pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Smith does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Vargas looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smith is fending him off so far but Vargas persists. Nope, Smith circles away and we're back to standing.

Vargas dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Vargas's head and hops out.

Smith has his foot on Vargas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vargas works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Smith is trying to control the position but Vargas postures up.

Smith has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vargas can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Johny Vargas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Vargas wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

Smith is looking for a triangle but Vargas pushes his legs off easily.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Smith is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Vargas has his hands clasped together but Smith extends and breaks Vargas's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Smith.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Frank Smith!
