PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alex Coates (ranked 5012 p4p, 500 weight class) and Jake Chimper (ranked 5955 p4p, 541 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alex Coates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Chimper!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Darius Henderson and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coates throws a head kick but Chimper moves out of range.
Alex Coates seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A head kick misses from Coates.
Chimper steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Coates.

Chimper is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Coates's half guard.

Chimper is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Coates sees it coming and defends easily.
Chimper wants to pass the guard but Coates is defending well.
Chimper missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Chimper is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Coates has managed to free his arm - good work.
Coates is refusing to be controlled, as Chimper sits in half guard.

Chimper is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Coates is just riding it out for now. Chimper eventually gives up the hold.

Coates tries to kick Chimper off in order to stand up. Chimper Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Coates tries to escape but Chimper is in control.

Chimper is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Coates is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Chimper is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Coates has escaped the position, nice work there.
Chimper sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Coates is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Coates is trying to buck Chimper off.

Chimper thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Chimper tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chimper has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jake Chimper dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Chimper closes the distance and clinches up with Coates, looking for a takedown. Chimper pushes Coates against the cage but Coates circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Chimper shoots for a double leg takedown but Coates sprawls well. He's pushed Chimper's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Sloppy strikes from Coates. Those never looked like landing.
Coates works over Chimper's head and body with a nice combination.
Coates fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Chimper has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Coates misses with the combination.
Coates looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Chimper fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Alex Coates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Chimper.

Chimper clinches with his opponent.
Coates lands a body shot in the clinch.
Chimper is breathing heavily.
Coates gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Coates breaks the clinch.

Coates throws a series of punches but Chimper avoids them all with ease.
Chimper gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Coates misses with a combination

and Chimper counters by clinching up.

Coates pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Coates throws a head kick that half lands.
Chimper's coach down at Arvins Bootcamp was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Chimper's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Coates with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Coates fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
A head kick misses from Coates.
Chimper shoots in for a takedown but Coates shows good takedown defense.
Coates fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Chimper.
Horrible takedown attempt by Chimper or perhaps it was just good defense by Coates, which made it look bad.
Coates swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Coates lands a high kick!

This has been an exciting period of action!
Coates lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Chimper avoids the head kick by Coates.
Coates throws a lazy head kick

and Chimper counters with a takedown into side control.

Chimper is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Coates has escaped the position, nice work there.
Coates is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Chimper is staying tight to Coates's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Coates is trying to get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chimper trying to control the position but Coates is working away.
Jake Chimper has got the better of the ground game so far.
Coates is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Chimper is controlling him well.

Chimper has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Coates is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Chimper yanks on the arm and Coates is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Chimper.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jake Chimper!
After the fight, Jake Chimper was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
