Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Heath Mercer (ranked 6884 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rickson Correira (ranked 6062 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Heath Mercer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rickson Correira!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Leandro Rodrigues and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Correira dives in for a single leg takedown but Mercer sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Mercer throws a counter high kick but Correira was just alert enough to avoid it.
Correira fails in his attempt to clinch.
It looked like Mercer was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Correira.

Mercer closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Mercer lands a takedown into guard.
Mercer with a flurry of punches that miss.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mercer cracks Correira with a solid left hand.
Mercer postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Mercer drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Correira dives on top into guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Correira is stalling in the full guard.
Mercer pulls Correira in close to his closed guard and prevents Correira from doing any damage or advancing position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mercer is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Correira pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mercer is keeping the position for now.
Correira would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Correira throws a big elbow that misses.
Correira controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Correira tries to free his leg and advance position but Mercer is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Correira trying to control the position from guard on top but Mercer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Correira looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Mercer!

Mercer throws Correira to one side and escapes!

Correira shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Mercer throws a sloppy head kick and Correira moves out of range easily.
Correira misses with a low kick.

Correira tries to keep at a distance but Mercer has taken the fight into the clinch.

Mercer breaks the clinch.
Correira shoots in for a double leg but Mercer sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Correira throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mercer was covering up waiting for the punch and Correira finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Correira wants to stand but Mercer is controlling his posture from full guard.

Correira is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Mercer is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Mercer has escaped and now he's on top!

Correira is controlling Mercer's posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Heath Mercer dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Horrible takedown attempt by Correira or perhaps it was just good defense by Mercer, which made it look bad.
Correira tries a head kick but it misses.
Correira looks for a takedown but Mercer sprawls well.
Mercer ducks under a wild hook from Correira.
Correira throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mercer lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

and Mercer counters with a nice double leg into side control. Correira won't be happy with that.
Mercer will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Correira avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Mercer.
Mercer cracks Correira with a big right hand but Correira just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Mercer tries to score with some ground and pound. Correira controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Correira is trying to buck Mercer off.
Mercer tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

Mercer tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Mercer trying to control the position but Correira is working away.
Correira tries to bench press Mercer off him but Mercer keeps the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Mercer thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Correira wants to control but Mercer postures up.

Mercer goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Correira rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Mercer's guard! Nice work there by Correira!
Correira wants to stand but Mercer has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Correira wants to control from the top but Mercer keeps moving.
Correira sitting in guard here, content to control.
Correira is continuing to stall.
Correira trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mercer is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Correira pushes Mercer up against the cage in a clinch.
Mercer is trying to drag Correira to the mat but Correira just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Correira successfully pulls guard.
Mercer in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Correira is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Let's hope that Correira has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Rickson Correira will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Correira looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Mercer closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mercer lands in his opponent's guard.

Mercer drops back, looking for a kneebar! Correira looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Correira looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Correira!

Mercer is looking for a sweep.

Correira postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Correira trying to control the position but Mercer is working away.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Correira has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Correira looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Correira thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Mercer's head.
Correira tries to stand and escape but Mercer is controlling the position.
Mercer really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Correira wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mercer keeps working.
Correira takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mercer blocking the ground and pound attempt from Correira.
Correira sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Correira wants to stand but Mercer has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Mercer tries to sprawl but Correira drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mercer is refusing to be controlled, as Correira sits in half guard.
Correira content to control rather than advance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mercer is looking to control Correira's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mercer avoid being mounted?

Correira escapes and gets back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Correira tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Mercer defends well and Correira ends up having to push Mercer into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Mercer tries to close the distance and clinch but Correira swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Mercer doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Correira counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Mercer!
Mercer tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

And that's the end of the fight!
Heath Mercer showed his dominance in that final round.
I have no idea who won that fight. Let's wait and see whether the judges are as confused as me! Time for a split decision perhaps?!. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
