PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Steven Petersen (ranked 5130 p4p, 469 weight class) and Steve Barover (ranked 2352 p4p, 241 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steven Petersen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Steve Barover!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Saam Ante and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Petersen throws a half hearted mid kick.
Barover changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Steven Petersen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Petersen throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Barover feints the counter takedown.
Petersen wants to slow Barover down by chopping away at his legs.
Petersen swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Petersen throws a push kick but Barover slaps the foot to one side.
Petersen throws a wild body kick that Barover sees coming a mile off.
Petersen keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barover moves out of range of the leg kick from Petersen.
Barover's coach down at London MMA Club was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Barover's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Barover looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Barover wants to control but Petersen is keeping him busy.

Barover is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Petersen wants to improve his position but Barover is controlling well.
Petersen definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Petersen keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Petersen is doing well to control the position and prevent Barover from advancing to side control.
Barover throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Petersen keeping hold of Barover's head, controlling as best he can.
Barover throws a strike but Petersen avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Petersen pulls Barover in close to his closed guard and prevents Barover from doing any damage or advancing position.

Barover trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Barover looking to sit in guard and control but Petersen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Barover has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Petersen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Barover is on top in guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Petersen is pulling down on Barover's head. It's preventing any offense from Barover, at least for the moment.
Petersen continues to stall.
Petersen has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Barover looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Petersen puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Barover wants to get back to full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Petersen is taking a breather. Barover says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Steven Petersen will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Petersen throws a looping overhand right but Barover ducks down to avoid it.

Nice uppercut lands for Petersen. That snapped Barover's head back.
Barover takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Petersen does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Petersen lands with a nice body punch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barover uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Petersen.

and Barover decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Petersen's guard.
Barover wants to pass the guard but Petersen is keeping the position.

Barover working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Petersen keeping moving, preventing Barover from controlling successfully.

Barover drops back, looking for a kneebar! Petersen looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Petersen looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Petersen!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Petersen avoids the attempt from Barover to control.
Barover is squirming around, avoiding Petersen's attempts to control the action.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Steven Petersen dominated that second round.
That's time! Petersen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Barover looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Petersen is fending him off so far but Barover persists. Nope, Petersen circles away and we're back to standing.
Petersen lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Petersen connects with a good right hand that stumbles Barover. Barover circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Barover moves out of range of the strikes.
Petersen throws a right hand that Barover ducks under and follows up with a left that Barover also avoids with ease.
Petersen looks to land a right hand but Barover moved out of range.
Barover takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

The fighters circling - Petersen throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Good leg kick by Petersen there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Steven Petersen is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Petersen tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Barover is able to avoid easily.
Petersen throws a body shot but no joy.
Petersen moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Barover avoids the head kick by Petersen.
Petersen explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Barover tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Petersen defends well and Barover ends up having to push Petersen into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Barover shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Petersen sprawls well. Petersen wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Barover gets slowly back to his feet.

Barover blocks a low kick nicely.
Barover has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Petersen.
Petersen looks to land a left hand but Barover moved out of range nicely.
Barover feints the counter takedown.
Barover uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Petersen.
And Barover tries to counter it with a takedown but Petersen pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Steven Petersen showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Petersen, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
