PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Berry Morse (ranked 24838 p4p, 0 weight class) and Klay Sons (ranked 6564 p4p, 0 weight class). Klay Sons told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Berry Morse!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Klay Sons!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Damien Edna and Winston Howard.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Morse closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Sons pushes Morse off and gets back to his feet.
Klay Sons seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sons swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Morse gets tackled into the cage by Sons. Sons maintains the clinch.
Morse is trying to pull guard but Sons turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Morse jumps into guard, dragging Sons to the mat.
Morse trying to control the position.
Sons trying to control but Morse is working from the bottom.
Morse throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Morse is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Morse not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Morse not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Sons wants to improve his position but Morse is controlling well.
Morse looks to land a strike but Sons avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Sons has Morse pulled in close to control his posture.
Morse throws a big right hand that misses.
Morse trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Morse working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sons looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Sons throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Sons utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Morse has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sons is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Morse throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Sons is trying to control the position but Morse postures up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Sons closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Morse quickly recovers to half guard.
Morse holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Well, if Sons is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Sons wants to lay and pray for a moment but Morse keeps working.
Morse regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Sons.

Morse not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Morse keeping full guard, as Sons tries to pass.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sons trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Morse pulls Sons in to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Sons gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Sons's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Morse doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Sons connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Sons moves into the clinch successfully.
Morse pressing his opponent against the cage.
Sons looking to throw knees to the head but Morse is blocking nicely.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Morse tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Berry Morse. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sons tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Morse's elbow.

Sons successfully pulls guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Sons is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Morse's half guard.
Morse controlling the position for now.
Sons is trying to control. Morse wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Sons tries to pass to full mount but Morse defends it.
Sons is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Morse moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Sons trying to control the position from guard on top but Morse is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sons loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sons has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sons trying to control but Morse is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Sons.
Morse tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Sons manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Morse feints and as Sons raises his hands in defense, Morse changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Morse throwing strikes from guard but Sons blocks nicely.
Morse in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Morse controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Sons is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Morse postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Morse with a flurry of punches that miss.
Sons doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Sons. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Morse throws an elbow that misses. Sons uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Morse's guard. Nice move by Sons!

Morse pulls Sons in close to prevent any damage.
Sons wants to control from the top but Morse keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sons stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Morse swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Morse is trying to keep Sons in close.
Sons is looking to stand up but Morse won't let him.
Sons looking to sit in guard and control but Morse gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Morse missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Morse wants to control from the top but Sons keeps moving.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Morse accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Sons really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Morse. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Morse loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Morse will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Sons throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Morse tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sons is in Morse's guard.

Morse can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sons controls the pace.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sons wants to control from the top but Morse keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Klay Sons showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Sons closes this distance looking for a takedown but Morse circles away.
Morse drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sons sprawls and moves away.

Sons fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Morse, pushing him back against the cage.

Morse jumps guard but Sons stands there with Morse around his waist. Morse gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Let's hope that Sons has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Sons thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Sons is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

It looks like Berry Morse has been cut.

Sons gets a double leg takedown into Morse's guard.
Sons is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Sons scoring with punches to the head and body.
Sons trying to control but Morse is working from the bottom.

Sons distracts Morse with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Sons passes into half guard.
Sons wants to lay and pray for a moment but Morse keeps working.
Morse is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Sons scores with a couple of nice shots.
Sons content to control rather than advance.
Sons sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Morse defending well though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sons wants to pass to mount but Morse is defending the position.

Morse looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Sons seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Klay Sons is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Klay Sons comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sons has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
