PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joao Pedro Mauricio DeSilva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joao Pedro Mauricio DeSilva!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
DeSilva leaves Johnson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Johnson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
DeSilva tries to bench press Johnson off him but Johnson keeps the position.
Johnson advances to full mount.
DeSilva wants to control but Johnson is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Johnson tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.

DeSilva is squirming around, avoiding Johnson's attempts to control the action.
DeSilva has given up his back here.
Johnson is hanging on to DeSilva's back as he tries to escape.

Johnson patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
DeSilva felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
DeSilva is trying to break free.

Johnson has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
DeSilva tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Johnson prevents DeSilva from getting the reversal.

DeSilva wants to control his opponent's hands but Johnson gets his hands free.
DeSilva turns into Johnson and is now in his guard.

DeSilva stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

DeSilva must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Johnson trying to keep a closed guard but DeSilva is proving a slippery customer.
DeSilva stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
DeSilva not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
DeSilva is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Johnson not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Johnson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


DeSilva stuffs the takedown.
DeSilva changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
DeSilva shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Johnson attempts a counter takedown but DeSilva avoids it well and moves away.
DeSilva closes this distance looking for a takedown but Johnson circles away.
Johnson shoots for a double leg takedown but DeSilva sprawls well. He's pushed Johnson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Nice takedown defense from DeSilva. No joy for Johnson on that attempt.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Johnson. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Johnson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

DeSilva pushes a forearm under Johnson's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Johnson is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Joao Pedro Mauricio DeSilva!
