PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Barrett Byers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jomuton Xuwatanabe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Xuwatanabe is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Slo Burn, "Prizefighter". Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Barrett Byers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jomuton Xuwatanabe!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Skip Squint and John Mangel.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Xuwatanabe misses with a series of wild punches.

Xuwatanabe looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Xuwatanabe wants to pass the guard but Byers is keeping the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Xuwatanabe drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Byers manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Xuwatanabe has Byers in his guard.

Xuwatanabe has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Byers off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Byers tries to clinch up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Xuwatanabe shoots in for a takedown but Byers shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Xuwatanabe circles away from the clinch attempt.
Xuwatanabe doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Byers shoots for a takedown but Xuwatanabe saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Byers shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Xuwatanabe napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Byers is trying to get an arm triangle but Xuwatanabe is defending well.
Xuwatanabe wants to control but Byers postures up.
Xuwatanabe is trying to get back to half guard.

Byers stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Byers fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
No joy there for Xuwatanabe, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Byers doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Xuwatanabe counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Barrett Byers. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Byers gets the takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Byers stands up and beckons Xuwatanabe to his feet.

Byers is breathing heavily.

Xuwatanabe dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Byers. That did some damage!
Xuwatanabe throws a nice looking combination but Byers bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Xuwatanabe lands a left and a right that sends Byers crashing to the canvas! Xuwatanabe dives into mount looking to finish!

Byers is rocked!

It looks like Barrett Byers has been cut.

Xuwatanabe working for a guillotine from mount but Byers is in no mood to give up.
Oh Byers is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Xuwatanabe drops a big elbow. That's hurt Byers! More shots from Xuwatanabe and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
