PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Benton Shaffer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bill West (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Benton Shaffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bill West!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and .




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
West throws a low kick, looking for Shaffer's leg but Shaffer calmly moves out of range.
Shaffer swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
West gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Shaffer counters with a left and a right that stings West.

West shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than West was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Shaffer wants to get back to his feet.
Shaffer tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The referee asks West politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. West prefers to stall for the moment though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shaffer tries to bench press West off him but West keeps the position.
Shaffer striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Shaffer is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, West asserts his dominance and retains side control.
West moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

It looks like Benton Shaffer has been cut.
Shaffer wants to get back to his feet.
West really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Shaffer. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Shaffer explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

West shoots in and bounces Shaffer off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Shaffer kicks West off and gets to his feet.
Bill West seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

West closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Shaffer fails to pull the fight into his guard.
West tries to break free but Shaffer pushes him back against the cage.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Shaffer is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables West to keep the fight standing.

Shaffer gets control of West's arms and successfully pulls guard. Shaffer will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Shaffer will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Shaffer looking for a guillotine here but West defends easily.
West pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Shaffer is keeping the position for now.

Shaffer pushes West off and scrambles back to his feet.

West throws a series of punches but Shaffer avoids them all with ease.
Shaffer shoots in looking for a takedown but West manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Shaffer's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Benton Shaffer. That's going to take a lot out of him.
West buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
West tries to clinch up.
West throws a series of punches but Shaffer avoids them all with ease.

West gets a double leg takedown into Shaffer's guard.
Shaffer is breathing heavily.
West trying to move into half guard but instead Shaffer has managed to sweep!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if West can do anything to dispel that myth.

West is looking for a triangle but Shaffer pushes his legs off easily.

West has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Shaffer is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for West.
West tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Shaffer easily slips into full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Shaffer.
West throws a sloppy head kick and Shaffer moves out of range easily.

West instigates a clinch.
West wants a takedown but no success here.

West tightens his grip and picks Shaffer up, before dumping him to the ground. Shaffer manages to land in guard.

Shaffer manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Shaffer prevents the takedown attempt.
A frustrated look appears on West's face as he tries to break the clinch.

West pulls guard successfully.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
West looking for a sweep. Not yet West, not yet.

West is working an open guard so Shaffer takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Shaffer darts in looking for a takedown but West gets double underhooks and turns Shaffer into the cage.
West misses with an attempted mid kick.
West tries a head kick but it misses.
Shaffer went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
West lands a nice shot to the body.

West rushes Shaffer and presses him up against the cage.

Shaffer has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but West regains guard immediately.

West pushes Shaffer off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
West misses with a kick to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
West tries to close the distance and clinch up but Shaffer swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Shaffer half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Shaffer dives in and grabs West's left leg, looking for a takedown. West pushes down on Shaffer's head and hops out.

West fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

West bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
West takes a little break here. Shaffer wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Shaffer tries to kick West off but West keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
West is looking to advance position but Shaffer won't allow it.
Shaffer wants to stand back up but West manages to pass into side control.
Shaffer is looking to get back to his feet here but West is keeping cool and he's managed to take Shaffer's back.
Shaffer is trying to stand back up.

West controls the action.
West landing with strikes.
Shaffer wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
West trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.

West is punishing Shaffer with some ground and pound.

Bill West showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


West shoots for a takedown but Shaffer saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.


Benton Shaffer's cut is getting worse.
Shaffer leaves West with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

West darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Shaffer landing rabbit punches to the side of West's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
West is pressing down on Shaffer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Shaffer is holding on for now.
West prevents Shaffer from standing back up.

West stops Shaffer from getting back to his feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

West moves into the clinch successfully.
Shaffer is trying to pull guard but West turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
West gets underhooks to prevent Shaffer's takedown attempt.

West's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
West tries for a takedown but Shaffer sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Benton Shaffer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bill West.
West keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

West clinches with his opponent.
The referee calls for West to work.

West gets control of Shaffer's arms and successfully pulls guard. West will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
West bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shaffer's guard.

Shaffer looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
West lands a couple of decent looking shots.


Benton Shaffer's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

West decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

West throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Shaffer tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. West is in Shaffer's guard.
Shaffer keeping moving, preventing West from controlling successfully.
Shaffer can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as West controls the pace.
Let's hope that West has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Bill West has got the better of the ground game so far.
West wanted to stand there but Shaffer had control of the position.
West tries to free his leg and advance position but Shaffer is retaining full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
West shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shaffer as he jumps to the side.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bill West comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well West has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
