PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Antony Avila (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Orwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Antony Avila!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, George Orwell!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Roosa Järviläinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Avila bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Avila working away.
Avila trying to control the action but Orwell is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Orwell is looking to regain half guard here but Avila keeps moving and retains side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Avila gets to mount! Orwell was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Avila misses with a head shot.
Orwell working to try and regain half guard.
Avila controlling the position easily from mount.
Orwell can't escape the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Avila punishing his opponent with strikes.
Orwell tries to hold on but Avila postures up.
Avila prevents Orwell from getting the reversal.

Avila working for a submission but Orwell is keeping him at bay.
Orwell keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Orwell can't escape the position.

Avila goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Orwell is on top in guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Avila can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Orwell controls the pace.

Orwell decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Avila, up you get!
Orwell slaps away a takedown attempt from Avila, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Avila gets tackled into the cage by Orwell. Orwell maintains the clinch.
Avila is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Avila is trying to maintain a safe position but Orwell gets an underhook and turns Avila into the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Orwell breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Avila gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Orwell to score an easy takedown into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Antony Avila will probably get the nod.
That's time! Avila's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Avila looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Orwell is fending him off so far but Avila persists. Nope, Orwell circles away and we're back to standing.

Orwell drives through and clinches with Avila against the cage.
Avila tries to stall but Orwell uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Orwell lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.


It looks like Antony Avila has been cut.
Avila is trying to force a seperation but Orwell has the dominant position.
Avila wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Orwell breaks from the clinch.

Avila gets tackled into the cage by Orwell. Orwell maintains the clinch.
Avila holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Avila can't find room to land a body shot as Orwell controls the action.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Avila can't break the clinch.

Orwell pulls guard successfully.
Orwell looking for a sweep. Not yet Orwell, not yet.
Antony Avila overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Orwell preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Orwell looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Orwell is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Avila is controlling him.
Orwell pulls Avila in close to prevent any damage.
Orwell looking for a sweep. Not yet Orwell, not yet.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Avila changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Orwell tries to avoid it but Avila manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Orwell to the ground. Orwell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Orwell clinches.
Orwell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Avila controlling the action here for a moment.

Avila turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Avila manages to end up in side control.

Avila working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Orwell is looking for a sweep.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Orwell manages to get back to half guard.

Avila seems to be looking for submissions.

Orwell manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Orwell closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Avila's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Orwell trying to control the position from guard on top but Avila is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Orwell decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sloppy strikes from Orwell. Those never looked like landing.

Orwell moves into range and clinches up with Avila.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Orwell is pressed up against the cage. Avila has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Orwell down to the mat. Orwell avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Antony Avila. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Orwell has managed to clinch.
Avila misses with a hook to the ribs.
Orwell misses with a knee strike.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Orwell lands a nice uppercut.
Avila pushes Orwell back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Orwell has Avila pressed against the cage, preventing Avila from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Avila stalling in the clinch but Orwell improves position.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Orwell breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A thudding body kick lands there by Orwell!

Orwell moves into range and clinches up with Avila.
Orwell is stalling here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

George Orwell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Antony Avila's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Avila shoots in looking for a takedown but Orwell manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Avila's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Orwell gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Avila.
Orwell lands a knee to the body.
Avila trying to control the position but instead, Orwell has worked for underhooks and has pushed Avila into the cage.

Orwell pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Orwell keeps the fight on the outside.
Avila shoots in and drives through. Orwell sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Antony Avila. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Orwell throws a series of punches but Avila moves out of range.
Orwell fakes a right and follows up with a big left that drops Avila to one knee - oooooh, he's wobbly! Avila looks to clinch but Orwell throws him off and pummels him into the canvas! Avila taps out under the strikes! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). George Orwell!
