PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joseph Mckay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lee Stephen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stephen has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 1, fighting out of London, Joseph Mckay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Lee Stephen!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, James Ackerman and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mckay slips a jab and a cross from Stephen.
Mckay wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Mckay closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Stephen did well to prevent Mckay getting side control.
Stephen scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Mckay manages to mount him!
Stephen looks winded!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mckay sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Stephen is trying to stand but he's just given Mckay his back.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Mckay controlling the positon.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Mckay looking to break Stephen's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Stephen remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Mckay will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Mckay has good solid back control here.
Stephen is trying to stand back up.
Mckay controlling the position well here. Stephen rolled but Mckay kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Mckay has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Mckay.
Mckay seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Stephen for as long as he can get away with.

Mckay has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Stephen throws a lazy uppercut

and Mckay decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Stephen's guard.
Mckay sitting in guard, not really doing much.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mckay postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Mckay gets to his feet - Stephen follows without any prompting.
Stephen is breathing heavily.
Stephen listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Mckay closes the distance and clinches up with Stephen, looking for a takedown. Mckay pushes Stephen against the cage but Stephen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Stephen gets caught flat footed, as Mckay shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Stephen is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Mckay dives into side control.

A lull in the action here.

Mckay stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Mckay dives in and grabs Stephen's left leg, looking for a takedown. Stephen pushes down on Mckay's head and hops out.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mckay shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Stephen pinned against the cage. Stephen gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joseph Mckay. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mckay tries to keep at a distance but Stephen has taken the fight into the clinch.

Mckay successfully pulls guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Mckay wants to stand up but Stephen is controlling him.

Mckay has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Stephen off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Stephen stuffs the takedown attempt from Mckay. Mckay gets slowly back to his feet.
Mckay really is a fat lump.

Stephen goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Mckay closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Stephen did well to prevent Mckay getting side control.
Stephen wants to stand back up but Mckay manages to pass into side control.
Mckay takes a little break here. Stephen wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Mckay stands up.
Mckay darts in looking for a takedown but Stephen gets double underhooks and turns Mckay into the cage.
Mckay doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Stephen counters with a lovely straight right hand!

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Stephen has managed to clinch.
Mckay can't get the takedown.

Mckay pulls Stephen into guard.

Stephen stands up and waves to Mckay to follow him.

Stephen gets tackled into the cage by Mckay. Mckay maintains the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Stephen wants to get back to striking at distance but Mckay won't allow it.

Mckay escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stephen misses with a hook

and Mckay counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Mckay's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joseph Mckay dominated that second round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Stephen misses with a double jab

and Mckay counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Stephen!
Joseph Mckay overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mckay is staying tight to Stephen's torso, preventing him from escaping.

Mckay decides to stand back up.
Mckay shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Stephen as he avoids it easily.

Mckay closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Stephen wants to stand back up but Mckay manages to pass into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Stephen is looking to get back to his feet here but Mckay is keeping cool and he's managed to take Stephen's back.
Stephen is trying to get back to his feet but Mckay has full control of the position and if anything, Stephen has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Stephen is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Mckay.
Mckay's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Stephen wants to get back to his feet.
Mckay has good solid back control here.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mckay, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
