PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Darrell Schultz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lucas Perez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Darrell Schultz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lucas Perez!
The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Leandro Rodrigues and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schultz motions for Perez to come forward. Schultz throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Schultz has a takedown stuffed.
Perez throws a sloppy head kick and Schultz moves out of range easily.
Schultz scores with a nice head shot.

Perez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Schultz sprawls well initially but Perez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Perez winds up and cracks Schultz with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Schultz wants to get back to full guard.
Perez is controlling the pace.
Schultz could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schultz is looking for a sweep. Perez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Perez blocks the strikes from Schultz.
Schultz might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Schultz is not content to let Perez control the position.
Schultz is trying to control but can't.
Perez is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Let's hope that Perez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Perez stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Perez tries a head kick but it misses.
Schultz tries to counter with a takedown but Perez is quick to defend against it.

Perez darts in and clinches Schultz up against the cage.

Perez pulls guard effortlessly.
Perez wants to sweep here but Schultz controlling him for the moment.

Schultz would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Perez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Perez working for submissions but it's allowed Schultz to get to half guard.
Well, if Schultz is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Schultz seems to be looking for submissions.
Perez tries to roll over but Schultz keeps him under control.

Schultz seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Perez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Schultz perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Perez is trying to maintain the position but Schultz is very close to passing his half guard.
Schultz stalling.
Perez pushes Schultz off looking to stand but Schultz dives back in and keeps control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Schultz falls off balance throwing a combination

and Perez holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Schultz is pushing Perez up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
With the fighters up against the cage, Schultz throws an elbow but misses.

Perez pulls guard.
Schultz would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Schultz drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Perez dives on top into guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Perez looking to pass the guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Perez would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Perez wants to control from the top but Schultz keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lucas Perez dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Schultz takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
The fight stays on the outside here - Schultz looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Perez closes the distance and pushes Schultz back into the cage.
Schultz is trying to pull guard but Perez has him pressed against the cage.
Schultz stalls.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Perez misses with a knee to the head.

Perez drags the fight down to the ground.
Perez striking off his back but it's not causing Schultz any problems.
Schultz loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Perez keeping moving, preventing Schultz from controlling successfully.
Perez seems keen to control Schultz's posture.
Schultz stands up over Perez, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Perez wants to stand up but Schultz is controlling him.
Schultz trying to control but Perez is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Lucas Perez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Perez looking for a takedown here - he's got it.

Schultz lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Schultz trying to control the position from guard on top but Perez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Perez managing to control the position.
Perez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Schultz postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Perez wants to get back to his feet but Schultz is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Schultz throws a big right hand that misses.
Perez preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Schultz postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Perez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Schultz stacks Perez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Schultz!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Perez is looking for a sweep.
Schultz wants to control but Perez is keeping him busy.

Perez is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Schultz is staying active.

Schultz has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Schultz shoots in for a double leg but Perez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Perez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Schultz is trying to defend but Perez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Schultz wants to stand back up but Perez manages to pass into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lucas Perez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Perez takes the fight into the clinch.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Schultz takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Perez is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Perez clinches up with Schultz and pushes him back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schultz looking to stall.

Schultz is trying to maintain a safe position but Perez gets an underhook and turns Schultz into the cage.

Schultz tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Perez smiles and moves away.
Schultz closes this distance looking for a takedown but Perez circles away.
Perez drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Schultz defends it well.

Perez drives through with a takedown into guard.

Schultz manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Perez jumps guard and drags Schultz to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Perez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Perez looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Schultz throwing strikes from guard but Perez blocks nicely.
Schultz looking to sit in guard and control but Perez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Schultz wants to stand but Perez is controlling the position.
Schultz wants to sweep here but Perez controlling him for the moment.
Schultz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Schultz is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Perez seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Schultz tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Perez is controlling the pace.
Schultz wants to get back to full guard but Perez has passed into side control.

Schultz bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

Perez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Schultz is not content to let Perez control the position.
Perez moves into full mount!
Lucas Perez has got the better of the ground game so far.
Schultz is looking to improve his position but Perez isn't that keen on the idea.
Schultz looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Perez is punishing Schultz with strikes - can he finish him?!

And that's the end of the fight!
Lucas Perez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Perez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
