PBP Commentary

Karelin has chosen Russian National Anthem as his entrance music. The key to victory for Doyle Brunson has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Vitaly Karelin!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, James Atkins and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karelin misses with a right hand

and Brunson holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Karelin is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Brunson pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Karelin lands a left hand.
Karelin swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Brunson gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.


It looks like Vitaly Karelin has been cut.
Brunson pushes Karelin back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Karelin swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Karelin prevents a body shot from Brunson.
Brunson looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Karelin tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Brunson is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Karelin is trying to break free.
Brunson creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brunson swings wildly with an uppercut but Karelin uses good head movement to avoid it.
Karelin prevents a body shot from Brunson.
Brunson lands with a short head shot on the inside.

Karelin has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Brunson is trying to keep an underhook but Karelin manages to get the takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Brunson holds on and takes a little breather.
Brunson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Brunson preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Karelin missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Karelin trying to control but Brunson is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brunson looking for a sweep. Not yet Brunson, not yet.
Karelin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Karelin is fighting to break Brunson's control of his arms but Brunson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Karelin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Brunson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Karelin postures up in Brunson's guard and throws a big left but Brunson blocks it.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Karelin distracts Brunson with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Karelin working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Karelin trying to control but Brunson is working from the bottom.
Brunson tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Karelin takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Karelin gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Brunson.
Karelin moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
The crowd cheers as Brunson lands an impressive looking overhand right. Karelin doesn't seem phased though.

Brunson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Karelin. Karelin circles away out of range and recomposes himself.


That has opened up Vitaly Karelin's cut even more.
Doyle Brunson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Brunson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Karelin manages to avoid it.

Brunson gets caught flat footed, as Karelin shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Karelin stopping the sweep attempt from Brunson.
Brunson pulls Karelin in close to prevent any damage.
Karelin is looking to work some ground and pound but Brunson has wrist control.
Brunson seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Karelin in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Karelin passes Brunson's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Brunson is trying to maintain the position but Karelin is very close to passing his half guard.
Brunson keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Karelin lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Karelin frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Karelin is in full mount looking to finish with strikes. He lands a big shot, followed by another and Brunson goes limp! The ref jumps in to end the fight - a big win for Karelin!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Vitaly Karelin!
Vitaly Karelin decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
