PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Wood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gilad Shalit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shalit has chosen MC Sapinho - Gilad Shalit as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Gilad Shalit will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Andrew Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gilad Shalit!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wood misses with a body punch
and Shalit cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Wood explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Shalit with a nice cross.
Wood slips a jab from Shalit.
Andrew Wood seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shalit misses with a looping right.
Wood pushes Shalit away with a front kick.
Shalit showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Wood.
Shalit moves out of range as Wood throws a body kick.
Wood throws a good cross that connects.
Wood steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Shalit.

Shalit gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Shalit is wriggling around but Wood manages to pass to half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!


Wood is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Shalit defends it well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Wood connects with a nice short shot to Shalit's temple.
Wood working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Wood throwing shots but Shalit is blocking nicely.
Wood not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Wood looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Shalit is trying to stand back up but Wood is controlling him
Wood takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Wood thows a huge punch but Shalit dodges it nicely.
Wood sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Wood winds up and cracks Shalit with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Shalit on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Wood prevents Shalit from improving his position.
Shalit desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Wood looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shalit with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Wood thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Shalit's head.
Wood lands with a punch from half guard.

Shalit is defending against the submission attempts here by Wood.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wood working over Shalit with some ground and pound. Shalit looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Wood is trying to control the action in half guard but Shalit is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Shalit is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Wood scoring with strikes to the body and head.

Wood is trying to work for a kimura but Shalit is defending well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Wood working over Shalit with some ground and pound. Shalit looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Shalit is looking for a sweep. Wood is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Wood uses his free foot to push down on Shalit's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Shalit.
Wood scoring with strikes but Shalit is staying in there.
Shalit is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Wood looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Shalit looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Shalit taking shots to the head.


Shalit is rocked!
Wood cracks Shalit with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Shalit is still in real trouble! Can Wood finish him?
Wood sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Shalit seems to have recovered his senses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shalit tries to reverse the position but Wood maintains control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wood is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Wood fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Wood softens up his opponent with a couple of shots there and then CRACK! One massive shot lands there and Shalit is out cold! Wood jumps to his feet and celebrates on the cage with the fans, who are, quite frankly, going absolutely mental!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Andrew Wood!
In defeat, Gilad Shalit stepped up to the mic, saying 'You know, shit happens, he was the better man tonight and I couldn't impose my gameplan. I train like a champion, fight like a champion and I lose like a champion. I'll come back stronger.'.
