PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Monson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Vet (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tony Monson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Vet!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Bruno Lombardi and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vet fails to land with a series of punches.
Vet cracks Monson with a right hand to the side of the head.
Vet works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Vet lands with an uppercut that bounces Monson off the cage and back into range.
Monson's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Vet connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Monson scrambles back to his feet.
Vet throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Monson counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Vet misses with a right hand

and Monson moves into the clinch.

Monson pulls guard effortlessly.
Monson is adopting a defensive guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vet wants to get up but he can't break Monson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Vet wants to stand and escape but instead Monson has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Vet can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Monson controls the pace.

Monson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Vet really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Monson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Vet is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Vet should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Vet wants to stand and escape but Monson is having none of it.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Vet has eaten all the pies!
Monson prevents Vet from getting back to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Monson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Vet is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Monson is controlling him.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Vet looks to land a left hand but Monson moved out of range nicely.

Monson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vet looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Monson tries to advance to mount but Vet denies him.

Vet is trying to buck Monson off.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Check out the look on Monson's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Monson is staying tight to Vet's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Vet is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Monson has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Monson tries to move into full mount but can't pass Vet's legs.

Monson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vet has escaped the position, nice work there.

Monson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Vet is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vet tries to escape but Monson is in control.
Monson just content to control the position.
Vet is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Monson creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Vet sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Vet is looking to get back to his feet here but Monson is keeping cool and he's managed to take Vet's back.
Monson is landing with strikes. Vet can't take much more of this.

Monson has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Monson lands punches and elbows.

Vet is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Monson gets his way!
Vet is trying to get back to his feet but Monson has full control of the position and if anything, Vet has just worked his way into a worse spot.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
What can Vet do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A lazy left from Vet finds it's target.
Monson takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Monson gets a double leg takedown into Vet's guard.
Vet wants to stand and escape but Monson is having none of it.
Monson works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Monson is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Monson is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Vet is trying to stand up.
Monson tries to control but Vet wriggling away.

Vet is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Vet wants to try and get back to his feet.
Tony Monson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Monson here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Monson cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Vet is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Monson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Vet can do to turn this around?

Monson pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
