PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Winford Ortega (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Gioino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that David Gioino was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Winford Ortega!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, David Gioino!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Johanna Lukiainen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gioino feints a jab promting Ortega to slip. Gioino then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Ortega slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.


It looks like Winford Ortega has been cut.
Gioino tried to score with a low kick but Ortega checks it.
Ortega swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Ortega throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gioino's waist but Gioino gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ortega off to one side.

Gioino moves into the clinch.

Ortega breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gioino throws a sloppy head kick and Ortega moves out of range easily.

Gioino gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Gioino wants to get back to his feet but Ortega passes into half guard.
Ortega will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The fighters are battling for position here. Gioino manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Ortega got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gioino has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Ortega has managed to get both his arms back between Gioino's legs - danger averted.

Ortega drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ortega jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Ortega wants to control from the top but Gioino keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Gioino manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
Ortega is trying to stall.
Gioino goes for a takedown in the clinch but Ortega prevents it.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Gioino jumps guard but Ortega stands there with Gioino around his waist. Gioino gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

A head punch blocked on the inside by Gioino.
Ortega tries to score a body lock takedown but Gioino shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Gioino shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ortega but Ortega pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gioino throws out a leg kick but Ortega moves out of range and Gioino only half commits.
Gioino shoots for a takedown but Ortega saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Ortega feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Winford Ortega overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Gioino has his foot on Ortega's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ortega works his way back into a safe position though.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gioino is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Ortega presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

David Gioino showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Ortega rushes Gioino and presses him up against the cage.
Gioino tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ortega just stands there and leans against the cage.

Ortega has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Gioino clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Gioino is trying to shake Ortega off. He's managed it and has hopped back to his feet! Ortega won't be happy about giving up the dominant position.
Gioino throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Ortega seems to have got his legs back now.

Gioino darts in and clinches Ortega up against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gioino pulls Ortega into guard.
Gioino looking for a sweep. Not yet Gioino, not yet.
Ortega would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Gioino is trying to control the position but Ortega postures up.
Ortega tries to stand but Gioino is controlling from the bottom.

Ortega decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Gioino fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Ortega avoids it really well and circles away.
David Gioino seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Gioino throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gioino keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Despite the aggression on Gioino's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Gioino tries to pull guard but Ortega holds him up against the cage and eventually Gioino drops back down to his feet.

Gioino shoots for a double leg takedown but Ortega sprawls well. He's pushed Gioino's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Winford Ortega has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
David Gioino is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

David Gioino comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gioino has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
