PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shawn Bonner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kirill Varlashin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Shawn Bonner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kirill Varlashin!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Viktor Lagutenko and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Varlashin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Varlashin is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Varlashin is working for a kimura but Bonner is defending it quite comfortably.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Varlashin sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Bonner defending well though.
Bonner is staying active underneath Varlashin, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bonner is controlling Varlashin's trapped leg to prevent Varlashin from advancing to side control.
Varlashin tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bonner knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Varlashin tries to stand but can't do so whilst Bonner controls his leg.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Varlashin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Bonner's head.
It looks like Varlashin is going to stand back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Varlashin doesn't manage to clinch there - Bonner circles away.

Varlashin shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Varlashin misses with a head shot. Bonner uses the momentum to regain guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Bonner avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Varlashin tries to free his leg and advance position but Bonner is retaining full guard.
Bonner keeping moving, preventing Varlashin from controlling successfully.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Varlashin throws a big right hand that misses.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Varlashin throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Bonner tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Varlashin is in Bonner's guard.
Varlashin tries to free his leg and advance position but Bonner is retaining full guard.

Varlashin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Bonner looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Varlashin looking to sit in guard and control but Bonner gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Varlashin is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Bonner missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kirill Varlashin dominated that round.
That's time! Bonner's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Bonner gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Varlashin trying to control but Bonner is working from the bottom.
Bonner trying to keep a closed guard but Varlashin is proving a slippery customer.
Varlashin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Bonner swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Bonner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Varlashin gets a double leg takedown into Bonner's guard.
Varlashin trying to control but Bonner is working from the bottom.
Varlashin passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Varlashin wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Bonner, who protects the arm well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Varlashin goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Bonner has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Varlashin but great work by Bonner.
Varlashin is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Bonner wants to stand but Varlashin has his arm trapped.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Bonner goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Varlashin rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Bonner's guard! Nice work there by Varlashin!
Varlashin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Bonner looking to hit a scissor sweep but Varlashin is one step ahead there.
Bonner really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Varlashin sitting in guard doing not very much at all here. Bonner doesn't need a second invitation though! He's locked up a guillotine and he's squeezing tight! That is tiiiiiiiiight! Varlashin paying the price for stalling here - he's pushing hard on the arm trying to free himself but it's no use! He's tapped! WOW, quick submission from Bonner - great work!
