PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Arjun Batar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Vansart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Arjun Batar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Steve Vansart!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Anni Minnemäki and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Batar fails with a takedown attempt.
A punch combination from Vansart misses.
Vansart throws a right hand that Batar ducks under and follows up with a left that Batar also avoids with ease.
A nice combination there by Vansart.


It looks like Arjun Batar has been cut.

Batar scores with a takedown into Vansart's guard.

Batar drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Vansart manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Batar has Vansart in his guard.


Batar has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vansart can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Vansart engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Vansart wanted to stand there but Batar had control of the position.
Vansart throws a big elbow that misses.
Vansart wants to stand but Batar is controlling his posture from full guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Vansart in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Vansart throws an elbow that misses. Batar uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Vansart's guard. Nice move by Batar!

Batar wants to pass the guard but Vansart is keeping the position.
Batar wants to control from the top but Vansart keeps moving.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Vansart utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Vansart is looking to stand up but Batar isn't so interested in that idea.
Vansart striking off his back but it's not causing Batar any problems.

Batar with a flurry of punches that miss.

Vansart is looking for a triangle but Batar pushes his legs off easily.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Batar trying to control the position from guard on top but Vansart is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
A combination from Vansart does no damage.
Vansart looks for the body kick but Batar saw that one coming.

Batar shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Vansart napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Batar is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vansart has escaped the position, nice work there.

Batar is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Vansart is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Batar tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Batar has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Batar wants to control but Vansart is keeping him busy.
Vansart manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Batar trying to hold on to Vansart's head to control him but Vansart postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Steve Vansart will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Arjun Batar's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Batar looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Vansart!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Vansart regains half guard, as Batar was trying to land strikes.

Vansart looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Batar is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vansart is refusing to be controlled, as Batar sits in half guard.

Batar is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Vansart doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Batar.

Batar is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Vansart has managed to free his arm - good work.

Batar is working for a submission of some sort.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Batar seems to be working for a kimura but Vansart defends the submission attempt.

Batar is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Batar tries to pass to full mount but Vansart defends it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Vansart punching from the bottom.
Vansart moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Batar postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Vansart is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Batar, into his guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Batar not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Vansart stands up from Batar's guard - Vansart perhaps looking for a knockout.

Vansart closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Vansart pushes Batar back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Batar goes for a takedown attempt but Vansart pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Vansart throws a combination. Batar tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Vansart pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Vansart looks to land a combination. Batar sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Vansart swinging wildly here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Vansart showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Vansart misses with a two punch combination.
Batar shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Vansart defends it nicely.
Vansart steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Batar.

Batar tries to counter with a takedown but Vansart is quick to defend against it.
Batar looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A left lands for Vansart.

Batar shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Batar showed some decent athleticism there.
Vansart wants to improve his position but Batar is controlling well.

Batar is looking for a kimura but Vansart is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Batar to get the leverage.
Batar thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Vansart's head.

Vansart kicks off Batar and gets to his feet.

Vansart darts in and clinches Batar up against the cage.

Vansart gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Vansart postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Batar to stand up.
Batar fails with the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arjun Batar. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Vansart swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Vansart's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Vansart duly obliges.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Batar tightens his grip and picks Vansart up, before dumping him to the ground. Vansart manages to land in guard.
Batar postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Vansart throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Vansart trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Vansart has his foot on Batar's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Batar works his way back into a safe position though.
Batar trying to control but Vansart is working from the bottom.

Batar is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Arjun Batar overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Batar won't allow Vansart to get back to his feet.
Batar postures up in Vansart's guard and throws a big left but Vansart blocks it.
Batar advances position into side control!
Check out the look on Batar's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Batar trying to control the action but Vansart is working from the bottom.
Vansart is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Batar asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Batar thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Batar looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Arjun Batar has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Steve Vansart is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
The strikes coming from Batar are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steve Vansart comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Vansart winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
