PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Augustine Garza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shogun Shin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Augustine Garza has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Augustine Garza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Shogun Shin!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Eliza Hachem and Darius Henderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Garza tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shin sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Garza somewhat.

Shin gets caught flat footed, as Garza shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Garza has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Shin controlling the position.
Shin wants to stand and escape but Garza is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Garza loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Garza really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Shin throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Garza throws a big elbow that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Garza pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Shin is keeping the position for now.
Garza loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Garza keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Shin's head.
Garza won't allow Shin to get back to his feet.

Garza drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Shin dives on top into guard.

Garza is looking to sweep but instead, Shin has passed into half guard.
Shin keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Garza looks like he's trying to stand up.
The fighters are battling for position here. Garza manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Shin is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Garza wants to sweep here but Shin controlling him for the moment.
Shin stays in close to Garza's body and controls the position.
Shin is standing up over Garza. Garza looks to escape but Shin dives into side control.
Garza tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Garza is working to get back to half guard.

Shin has hold of Garza's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Garza manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Garza sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Shin content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Shin throws a strike but Garza avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

Shin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Garza has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Shin has managed to get both his arms back between Garza's legs - danger averted.
Garza tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Shin tries to free his leg and advance position but Garza is retaining full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shin is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Garza tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shin sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Garza somewhat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Shogun Shin will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Shin lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Shin connects with a high kick.
Shin checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Shin steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Garza.
Shin leaves Garza with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shin stuffs the takedown attempt from Garza. Garza gets slowly back to his feet.
Shin is looking for the big counter here.
Shin lands a nice looking kick to the body. Garza takes a step back to recover.

Garza clinches up with Shin and pushes him back against the cage.

Shin drags the fight down to the ground.
Shin has his hands on Garza's head, controlling the position.

Garza stands up from Shin's guard - Garza perhaps looking for a knockout.
Garza walks into a stiff left hand from Shin.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Garza is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Augustine Garza. That's going to take a lot out of him.
No luck for Garza with that takedown attempt.
Garza shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shin as he jumps to the side.
Shin lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Garza backs up against the cage.

Shin moves into range and clinches up with Garza.
Shin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Shin lands a damaging elbow.


It looks like Augustine Garza has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Shin lands a body shot in the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Knees in the clinch landing for Shin.

Shin escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Garza chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Shin can pounce on him.
Garza changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Shin tries to avoid it but Garza manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Shin to the ground. Shin escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Shin shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Garza's guard.
Shin's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Shogun Shin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Let's hope that Shin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Garza is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Shin dives into side control.
Garza is looking for a sweep.
Shin misses with the ground and pound.
Garza being controlled for a moment.
Garza can't do much from the bottom here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shin controls the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shogun Shin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Augustine Garza's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Shin tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Garza paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Garza tries to counter by clinching up but Shin breaks away and moves out of range.
Shin throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Shin changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Garza looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Garza pushes Shin away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Shin gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Shin controls the position.
Garza is trying to improve his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Garza is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Shin asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Garza stops Shin from passing to mount.

Garza is looking to regain half guard here but Shin keeps moving and retains side control.
Garza is working hard here to advance position.
Shin misses with the ground and pound.
Garza bucks up and tries to throw Shin off but instead Shin has got his back!
Shin is hanging on to Garza's back as he tries to escape.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Garza looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
Shin has the hooks in. Garza is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Shin throwing wild punches that miss their target.

Shin has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Garza's body.
Shin keeps control of the position as Garza tries to break free.
Shin slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Garza is trying to stand back up.

Shin is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Garza is defending well though. Shin let's go of the attempt for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Garza trying to get back to his feet but Shin is in full control for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Augustine Garza has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Shogun Shin is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
You can see the frustration on Garza's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shogun Shin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Shin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
