PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Own Compton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mathias Matthews (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Own Compton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mathias Matthews!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Donatello Bradman and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matthews throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Compton stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Matthews looks to throw the jab but Compton is out of range.
Compton steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Matthews.
Matthews takes a swing at Compton's ribcage but misses.
Compton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Matthews's waist but Matthews gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Compton off to one side.
Compton tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Matthews defends well and Compton ends up having to push Matthews into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Matthews misses with a head kick.
Matthews throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Compton wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Matthews keeps the fight on the outside.
Matthews thinks about the counter body kick.
Compton shoots in for a double leg but Matthews sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Matthews is looking for the big counter here.

Matthews really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Compton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Matthews throws a low kick, looking for Compton's leg but Compton calmly moves out of range.

Compton throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Matthews was covering up waiting for the punch and Compton finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Matthews told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Compton is looking to work some ground and pound but Matthews has wrist control.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Compton shoots in but no luck this time.
Compton tries to clinch up but Matthews circles away and keeps his distance.

Compton went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Compton closes this distance looking for a takedown but Matthews circles away.

Matthews has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Matthews throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Compton is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Matthews doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Compton.
Own Compton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Compton is trying to control the action in half guard but Matthews is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Matthews tries to roll over but Compton keeps him under control.

Compton is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Matthews is not content to let Compton control the position.
Matthews keeping hold of Compton's head, controlling as best he can.
Matthews is looking to get back to full guard here but Compton has managed to pass to side control instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Compton goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Matthews has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Compton but great work by Matthews.

Matthews tries to stand but can't do so whilst Compton controls his leg.

Compton is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Matthews pulls his head out easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Compton regains full guard. Nicely done.

Mathias Matthews showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Compton misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Matthews throws out a counter right but Compton avoids it with no problem.
Matthews connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Compton tries to score a power double leg takedown but Matthews sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Compton somewhat.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Matthews has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Compton can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Compton postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Matthews appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Matthews is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Compton rather than just go for the knockout.

Matthews tries to clinch but Compton moves out of range.
Compton shoots in for a takedown but Matthews shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Own Compton has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Matthews drops Compton with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Compton looks back up at him and smiles so Matthews waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.


Compton is rocked!

Matthews throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Compton tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Matthews is in Compton's guard.
Mathias Matthews is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Oh Compton is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Mathias Matthews comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Matthews winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
