PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Chris Shipley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aecio Neves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chris Shipley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Aecio Neves!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shipley tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Neves decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Shipley's guard.
Shipley wants to sweep but no luck.
Shipley keeping full guard, as Neves tries to pass.
Neves keeps trying to improve his position.
Neves not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Neves throwing strikes from guard but Shipley blocks nicely.
Neves is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Shipley closes this distance looking for a takedown but Neves circles away.

Shipley tries to keep at a distance but Neves has taken the fight into the clinch.
Shipley is trying to push Neves away but Neves has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Neves breaks the clinch.
Nice takedown defense from Neves. No joy for Shipley on that attempt.
Shipley misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Shipley. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Neves shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Neves showed some decent athleticism there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Neves in particular looking to stall.
Shipley blocking the ground and pound attempt from Neves.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Neves trying to pass the guard but Shipley defending well.
Neves is taking a breather. Shipley says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Neves's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
More stalling from Neves.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Neves stuffs the takedown attempt from Shipley. Shipley gets slowly back to his feet.

Neves shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shipley manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Neves slips nicely into half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Neves keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
It looks like Neves is going to stand back up.
Well, if Neves is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Neves seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Neves perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aecio Neves dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Neves throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Shipley tries to clinch but Neves is having none of it.
Neves takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Shipley throws a right and a left that both miss.
Shipley pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Neves tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Shipley moves out of range of the body kick.
Neves is trying hard to land a takedown here. Shipley sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Neves takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Shipley throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Neves gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Neves escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Neves feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Neves wants to stand but Shipley is controlling his posture from full guard.

Shipley working for submissions but it's allowed Neves to get to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shipley blocking the ground and pound attempt from Neves.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Neves tries to pass to full mount but Shipley defends it.
Shipley is trying to maintain the position but Neves is very close to passing his half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Neves is continuing to stall.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Neves avoids a kick to the body.
Neves doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Shipley is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Shipley takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.

Neves fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Shipley, pushing him back against the cage.

Neves pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shipley looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Neves gets the takedown into side control.
Shipley is trying to strike from the bottom but Neves has passed into full mount.
Neves takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Shipley is working to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shipley is working hard here to advance position.
Neves lands a couple of good shots and Shipley has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Neves trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Shipley doesn't escape.
Neves lands strikes to the head.
Neves has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Neves patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
Shipley looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aecio Neves showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Shipley is trying to pull guard but Neves turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Neves manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shipley manages to get himself to full guard.

Neves's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Neves moves into range and clinches up with Shipley.
Shipley lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Neves breaks from the clinch.

Neves has Shipley up against the cage in a clinch.

Neves has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Shipley uses from the top position.

Neves wants to stand and escape but Shipley is having none of it.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Neves can do anything to dispel that myth.
Neves is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Neves is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Neves keeping moving, preventing Shipley from controlling successfully.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Neves wants to stand up but Shipley is controlling him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Shipley stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shipley wants it to stay on the feet.

Neves manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Shipley on his heels. He'll look to pass Shipley's guard now, I'm sure.

Chris Shipley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Aecio Neves is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Neves slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Aecio Neves comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Neves has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
