PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Pedro Lopez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brad Shaw (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pedro Lopez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brad Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Chad Campbell and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lopez checks a leg kick.
Lopez throws a front kick aimed at Shaw's knee but Shaw avoids it well.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Lopez enables Shaw to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Lopez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Lopez is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Lopez is thwarting Shaw's attempts to control the position.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Lopez is working for a kimura but Shaw is defending it quite comfortably.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shaw is defending against the submission attempts here by Lopez.
Shaw felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Shaw gets back to full guard.
Lopez tries to free his leg and advance position but Shaw is retaining full guard.

Shaw looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Lopez is working for a submission of some sort.

Shaw wants to get back to full guard.
Shaw wants to control but Lopez is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lopez is looking to take a break and control but Shaw is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Lopez seems to be working for a kimura but Shaw defends the submission attempt.
Shaw wants to get back to full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lopez is pressing down on Shaw's thigh, looking to free his foot. Shaw is holding on for now.
Lopez wants to control but Shaw is keeping him busy.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Shaw missing with a left hand there. Lopez was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Shaw takes a swing at Lopez's ribcage but misses.
Lopez changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Lopez pivots, looking for a leg kick but Shaw is out of range and Lopez settles back down.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shaw fails to land with a series of punches.

Shaw gets the takedown into side control.
Lopez sneaks back into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Brad Shaw will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Shaw throws a left and a right that both miss

and Lopez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Shaw's guard.
Lopez passes into half guard.

Lopez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lopez is just content to waste time from the top position. Shaw takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Shaw wants to sweep but no luck.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shaw is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Lopez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shaw swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shaw is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lopez is aware though and is defending well.

Shaw working for a triangle but Lopez defends it easily.
Shaw trying to keep a closed guard but Lopez is proving a slippery customer.

Lopez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Lopez looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Shaw is defending well. Lopez quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Shaw has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Lopez celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
