Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JayDee Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Whyte!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Josh West and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Whyte slaps away a takedown attempt from Penn, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Whyte throws a nice inside leg kick.
Penn misses with a takedown attempt - Whyte sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Whyte defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Penn.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for JayDee Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn.
Penn has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Penn tries for a takedown but Whyte sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
We've been informed that Whyte has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Penn scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Whyte pushes Penn off and gets back to his feet.
Penn goes for a double leg but Whyte avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Whyte continues to drive forward.
Stalling in the clinch from Whyte.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Whyte lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.


It looks like JayDee Penn has been cut.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Penn manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Whyte controlling from the top position.
Whyte stopping the sweep attempt from Penn.
Penn is trying to control the position but Whyte postures up.
Whyte sitting in guard here, content to control.
Penn looking to hit a scissor sweep but Whyte is one step ahead there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Penn working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Whyte doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Whyte manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Whyte controls from within his opponent's guard.
Whyte wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.
Whyte is looking to stand up but Penn won't let him.
Whyte wants to pass the guard but Penn is keeping the position.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Whyte got a little sloppy there for a moment and Penn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Whyte has managed to get both his arms back between Penn's legs - danger averted.
Penn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Whyte controls the pace.
Penn has a closed guard, preventing Whyte from standing up.

Penn looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Penn is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Whyte defends well.

Penn has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Whyte should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Penn has tightened it up now! Whyte should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). JayDee Penn!
In his post fight interview, JayDee Penn started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
