PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Francis Hale (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Lennon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Lennon told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Francis Hale!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, John Lennon!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Daniel Bishop and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lennon fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hale, pushing him back against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Lennon's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Lennon has picked Hale up - he's going for a ride! Lennon dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Lennon is nestled in close to Hale, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Lennon missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Lennon is taking a breather. Hale says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Lennon is keen to just control but Hale is a slippery customer.

Lennon stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Hale gets caught napping as Lennon dives in and scores a takedown. Hale manages to retain guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Hale looking for a sweep. Not yet Hale, not yet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Lennon gets to his feet. Hale looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Lennon shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hale manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Lennon wants to control from the top but Hale keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lennon preventing the sweep.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Lennon's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. John Lennon wasn't active enough on the ground.

Lennon closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Lennon wants to control but Hale is keeping him busy.
Hale tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Lennon decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Hale throws a head kick that misses.

Lennon shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hale is trying to defend but Lennon finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Lennon decides to return to a standing position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lennon fails to land with a series of punches.
Lennon thows a leg kick but Hale checks it
and Hale counters with a head kick.

Hale has taken the fight to the clinch.

Lennon drags the fight down to the ground.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Lennon is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Lennon has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hale can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Lennon dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Lennon closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lennon lands in his opponent's guard.

Lennon controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lennon wants to control from the top but Hale keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. John Lennon was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Lennon looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Hale!
Lennon throws a strike aimed at the side of Hale's head but Hale avoids it well.

Lennon stands up.
Hale avoids the body shot from Lennon.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lennon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Lennon wants it to stay on the feet.

Lennon bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Lennon wants to control but Hale is keeping him busy.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Lennon decides to stand back up. Lennon steps back and let's Hale get back to his feet.
Hale lands a head kick. Lennon smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Lennon gets the takedown into side control.
Lennon advances to mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hale knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lennon on the ground.
Lennon trying to control but Hale is having none of it.
Lennon landing strikes from the mount and Hale is in trouble!
Lennon lands a big shot there that rocks Hale but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Lennon looking to control but Hale is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lennon lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Lennon lands a nice shot to the head.
Hale wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Lennon dominating with strikes here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lennon tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Lennon trying to control but Hale is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Lennon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Lennon closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hale to the mat! Hale manages to get full guard.

Lennon drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lennon jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

John Lennon has got the better of the ground game so far.
Lennon trying to control the position from guard on top but Hale is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Lennon stands and steps away. Hale gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Lennon fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Hale to the ground. Lennon is now in Hale's guard.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by John Lennon.

Lennon clinches up with Hale and pushes him back against the cage.

Lennon has Hale pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Lennon pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hale tumbling to the mat - Lennon dives into Hale's guard.
Lennon chips away with some ground and pound.
Lennon slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Lennon slows the pace down.
Lennon postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lennon is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Hale is not content to let Lennon control the position.

Lennon decides to stand back up. Lennon steps back and let's Hale get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lennon shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hale is trying to defend but Lennon finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Lennon passes to full mount!
Lennon trying to control but Hale is having none of it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hale is trying to escape the mount.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Lennon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lennon has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
