PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Magnus Scott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scott comes into the arena with Ironfist blaring out of the sound system. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Magnus Scott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Smith!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Jeff Smith and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith slaps away a takedown attempt from Scott, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Smith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
We've been hearing reports that Scott has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Scott drives through and clinches with Smith against the cage.
Smith gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Scott.
Scott is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Magnus Scott. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith tries to land a knee to the head but Scott blocks with his arms.
Scott dodges an elbow strike from Smith.

Smith's coach down at Steel Penn/Heavy Hands Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Smith's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Smith fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Scott to the ground. Smith is now in Scott's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Scott is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Scott holds on and takes a little breather.

Smith would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Scott shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smith pinned against the cage. Smith gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Scott has Smith pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Smith manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Scott is on top in guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Scott doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.
Scott wants to clinch.
Smith throws a head kick but Scott moves out of range.
Scott shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.

Scott shoots in and drives through. Smith sprawls well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

and Smith counters with a thumping low kick.
Smith throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.


It looks like Magnus Scott has been cut.
Scott misses with a takedown attempt - Smith sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Smith throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Scott shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Smith but Smith pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Scott darts in looking for a takedown but Smith gets double underhooks and turns Scott into the cage.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Smith tries to clinch up but Scott circles away and keeps his distance.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

John Smith seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Smith tries to clinch but Scott moves out of range.
Scott fails with the takedown
and Smith counters with a good, hard body kick but Scott shrugs it off.
Scott takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Smith tries to clinch up but Scott circles away and keeps his distance.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith staying out of range there.

Smith takes the fight into the clinch.
Smith comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Magnus Scott's cut.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Smith clinches up with Scott and pushes him back against the cage.
Scott tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Smith just stands there and leans against the cage.
Scott is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Smith throws a knee to the head but misses.
Scott goes for a takedown attempt but Smith pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Scott dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Scott's head and hops out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Magnus Scott. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Scott shoots in looking for a takedown. Smith tries to sprawl out of it but Scott keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Smith lands with a thumping leg kick.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smith shoots in and bounces Scott off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Smith closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Smith wants to control but Scott is keeping him busy.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The fighters are battling for position here. Scott manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Scott pulls Smith in close to prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Magnus Scott just wasn't active enough.

Scott drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Scott controls from within his opponent's guard.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Scott not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Scott closes the distance and clinches.
Scott has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Smith avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Magnus Scott.
I think Scott has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
