PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Robledo Puch (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Volya Nikolaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nikolaev has chosen Fever as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Robledo Puch!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Volya Nikolaev!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Igor Prikhodko and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Puch misses with a straight right.
Puch misses with a hook. Nikolaev ducked under it nicely.

Puch shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Nikolaev's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Nikolaev is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Puch connects with a couple of short punches.
Puch landing with the ground and pound.
Puch sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Nikolaev's guard.

Puch has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Puch thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Nikolaev's head.

Nikolaev is refusing to be controlled, as Puch sits in half guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nikolaev is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Puch's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Puch's back!
Nikolaev is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Puch up.
Nikolaev is punishing Puch with some ground and pound.

Nikolaev throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Nikolaev looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Let's hope that Nikolaev has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Nikolaev looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Puch trying to control but Nikolaev postures up.
We've been hearing good reports from Puch's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Puch tries to get to full guard but Nikolaev has control of the leg.
Nikolaev tries to pass to full mount but Puch defends it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Puch keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Puch is controlling Nikolaev's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Nikolaev looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Puch with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Puch tries to roll over but Nikolaev keeps him under control.

Nikolaev wants to lay and pray for a moment but Puch keeps working.
Puch is looking to improve his position.
Nikolaev throwing shots but Puch is blocking nicely.
Nikolaev is nestled in close to Puch, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Puch regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Nikolaev.
Nikolaev is working Puch over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Puch is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Nikolaev is aware though and is defending well.
Puch not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Puch looking to hit a scissor sweep but Nikolaev is one step ahead there.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Puch escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Nikolaev gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Nikolaev lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Puch is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Nikolaev frees his head nicely. Oh but Puch has switched to an armbar! Nikolaev is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Armbar). Robledo Puch!

A very excited looking Robledo Puch made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
