The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maverick tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Mean tries to bum rush Maverick with a series of wild strikes but Maverick uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Mean has had enough of the clinch but Maverick keeps him there for the moment.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mean tries to stand but Maverick is controlling from the bottom.
Maverick manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mean manages to get himself to full guard.

Maverick wants to control from the top but Mean keeps moving.
Mean is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Maverick stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mean swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Maverick seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mean does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Mean is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Mean is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That was a close round but I would say that Tom Maverick will probably get the nod.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Maverick manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Mean really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Maverick. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Maverick working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mean doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mean manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Maverick is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Mean frees his head nicely. Oh but Maverick has switched to an armbar! Mean is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
