PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Calvin Bean (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bob Knife (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Calvin Bean!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Bob Knife!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Shirou Masuda and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bean shoots and misses

and Knife counters by clinching up.
Knife digs a right hand into Bean's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Bean's gas tank.
Bean is breathing heavily.
Bean is trying to push Knife away but Knife has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Knife trying to land knees to the body.

Knife jumps into guard, dragging Bean to the mat.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Knife manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bean manages to get himself to full guard.
Knife seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Bean is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Knife is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Knife slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Knife should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Knife is pushing down on Bean's leg trying to pass to half guard. Bean is fighting to maintain full guard but Knife has managed to sneak the leg through.
Bean knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Knife on the ground.

Knife is looking for a kimura here.
Knife thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Bean's head.

Knife scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Knife seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Knife has eaten all the pies!
Knife winds up and cracks Bean with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Knife is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Bean has managed to free his arm - good work.
Knife is taking a breather. Bean says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Knife thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Knife is just content to waste time from the top position. Bean takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Knife is stalling in the full guard.
Bean will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Knife would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Bob Knife wasn't active enough on the ground.

Knife darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Knife is looking to pass Bean's guard but actually Bean recovers to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bob Knife dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Bean fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Knife avoids it really well and circles away.

Bean gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Knife to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Bean can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Knife controls the pace.
Bean is trying to keep Knife in close.
Bean really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Bean wants to stand but Knife is controlling the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Bean being controlled here, momentarily.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Bean keeping moving, preventing Knife from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Bob Knife.
Knife throws a leg kick that misses.

Bean shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Knife napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Knife manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Knife seems to be working for a kimura but Bean defends the submission attempt.
Knife stalling.

Knife is trying to work for a kimura but Bean is defending well.
Knife moves nicely into side control.
Bob Knife has got the better of the ground game so far.

Knife remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Bean is looking for a sweep.
Knife takes a little break here. Bean wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Knife wants to stand but Bean is controlling his arm.

Bean trying to remain calm as Knife controls from the top position.
Knife tries to stand but Bean is controlling his head.
Check out the look on Knife's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
You can see the frustration on Bean's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Bean is trying to get back to his feet.

Bob Knife showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Bean's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Knife controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Knife passes Bean's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Bean trying to control from the bottom.
Knife is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Bean reverses the position - he's now on top in Knife's guard.
Knife manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bean manages to get himself to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Knife is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Knife passes Bean's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Knife is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Knife trying to pass the guard but Bean defending well.

Well, if Knife is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Knife seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bean does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Bob Knife hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Knife instigates a clinch.
Knife lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Knife just leaning against Bean, taking a breather.
Knife doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Knife gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Knife controlling the action here.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Knife not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Knife in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Bean tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Knife!
