PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mat Kowalak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jorge Thiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jorge Thiago is staring across the ring at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mat Kowalak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jorge Thiago!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, Peter Branson and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thiago connects with a good right hand that stumbles Kowalak. Kowalak circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Thiago throws a poor cross that misses

and Kowalak counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Kowalak is trying to work for a kimura but Thiago is defending well.

Kowalak is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Thiago keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Kowalak passes the guard and advances to mount!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kowalak stands up from mount. Strange move.
Thiago does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Thiago goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Thiago throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Kowalak sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Thiago throws a series of strikes that have Kowalak backpedaling.
Nice shot lands for Thiago.
Kowalak misses with a head kick.
Thiago throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Thiago turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Jorge Thiago seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thiago darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Kowalak fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Kowalak definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Kowalak slips under a jab from Thiago.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Thiago.
Thiago throws a right and a left that Kowalak avoids nicely.
Kowalak shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Thiago as he avoids it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kowalak moves out of range of the body kick.
Kowalak tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Thiago defends well and Kowalak ends up having to push Thiago into the ropes where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mat Kowalak. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Thiago pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the ropes.
Kowalak fails to pull guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kowalak is looking for a takedown.
Thiago throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Still in the clinch, Thiago scores with a nice short uppercut.

Kowalak has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Thiago uses from the top position.
Thiago must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kowalak bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Thiago's guard.
Kowalak trying to control but Thiago is working from the bottom.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Thiago avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kowalak works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Thiago is trying to stand up here but Kowalak is controlling him well.
Thiago is in trouble now - Kowalak has advanced to mount!
Kowalak looking to ground and pound but Thiago is blocking nicely.
Kowalak thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Kowalak throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Thiago because Kowalak loaded up on that one.

Kowalak stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Thiago has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Kowalak is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Kowalak uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Thiago.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Thiago misses with a straight right.
Kowalak fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Thiago throws a body kick that misses.
Thiago lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Thiago jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Kowalak misses with a head kick.
Thiago stuffs the takedown.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Thiago misses with a kick to the body.
Jorge Thiago is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kowalak on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Kowalak ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Kowalak moves out of range of the body kick.

Thiago gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mat Kowalak dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Thiago explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.

Kowalak gets the takedown into side control.

Kowalak is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Thiago has escaped the position, nice work there.
Kowalak wants to control but Thiago is keeping him busy.

Kowalak is working to tighten his grip on Thiago's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Thiago has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Kowalak is really squeezing tight and eventually Thiago passes out! Kowalak breaks the hold and jumps onto the ropes to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Mat Kowalak!
Our winner, Mat Kowalak, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
