The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Xavier looks to clinch

and Chavez counters by clinching up.

Chavez has Xavier pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Chavez pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Xavier tumbling to the mat - Chavez dives into Xavier 's guard.

Xavier wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Chavez is now in half guard.

We've been informed that Xavier has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Chavez seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.
Xavier tries to score a body lock takedown but Chavez shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Chavez tightens his grip and picks Xavier up, before dumping him to the ground. Xavier manages to land in guard.

The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Chavez for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

Xavier wants to pass the guard but Chavez is keeping the position.

Chavez is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Xavier presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Chavez has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Xavier regains guard immediately.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Chavez pushes Xavier off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Chavez changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Xavier looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Freeman Chavez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Xavier takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Chavez lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Chavez cracks Xavier with a big right hand but Xavier just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Chavez is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Xavier is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Xavier is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Chavez's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
