PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Todd Lane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike John (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Todd Lane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike John!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Damien Edna and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
John shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lane pinned against the cage. Lane gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
John shoots in and drives through. Lane sprawls well.

John closes the distance and pushes Lane back into the cage.

John pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
John fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Todd Lane has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike John.
John pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
A head kick misses from John.

John lands a left and a right that send Lane crashing to the mat, dazed. John thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


Lane is rocked!


It looks like Todd Lane has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
John connects with an inside leg kick.
Oh Lane is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
John tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lane swivels and escapes.

That's one minute gone in the round.

John gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Lane has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by John after a bit of a struggle.
Lane seems to have got his legs back now.
A short right from Lane.
Lane takes an elbow to the forehead.
Lane tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. John smiles and moves away.
John darts in looking for a takedown but Lane gets double underhooks and turns John into the cage.
John is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Lane is defending well.
John is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Lane tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. John just stands there and leans against the cage.

John manages to break the clinch.

John closes the distance and clinches.
John lands an uppercut.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lane fails to pull the fight into his guard.
John prevents a takedown attempt there.
John effectively controlling the action here.
Lane drops down looking for an ankle pick but John pulls his leg out and moves away.
John tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Lane defends well and John ends up having to push Lane into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

John escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
John fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
John looks winded!

and Lane holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Lane is looking for a takedown up against the cage. John gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Lane is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables John to keep the fight standing.
John is defending well against a takedown attempt.
A battle for position here, against the cage.

Lane turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
John tries to bench press Lane off him but Lane keeps the position.

Lane stands up and beckons John to his feet.
John throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
John misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

John has managed to clinch.
Lane tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. John smiles and moves away.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Lane defends well against a solid takedown attempt from John.

Lane closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. John quickly recovers to half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Lane is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so John is just riding it out for now. Lane eventually gives up the hold.

John manages to escape and get back to his feet!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike John dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Todd Lane's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Lane fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
John dives in and grabs Lane's left leg, looking for a takedown. Lane pushes down on John's head and hops out.
John moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Lane goes for a double leg but John avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as John continues to drive forward.

John gets control of Lane's arms and successfully pulls guard. John will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
John pulls Lane in to control the position.
Lane wants to control from the top but John keeps moving.
Lane content to stall in guard here.

John working for a triangle but Lane defends it easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Lane got a little sloppy there for a moment and John has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lane has managed to get both his arms back between John's legs - danger averted.
John is breathing heavily.
Lane controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
John looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Lane trying to control but John is working from the bottom.
John wants to sweep but no luck.

John keeps trying to improve his position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Todd Lane just wasn't active enough.
Lane changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. John tries to avoid it but Lane manages to keep hold of a leg and drag John to the ground. John escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Todd Lane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
John fails with the takedown.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from John is defended easily by Lane.
John stuffs the takedown attempt from Lane. Lane gets slowly back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
John looks for the body kick but Lane saw that one coming.

Lane gets a double leg takedown into John's guard.
Lane is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

John looking for a guillotine here but Lane defends easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lane sitting in guard, not really doing much.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lane thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
John keeping moving, preventing Lane from controlling successfully.
Lane content to stall in guard here.
Lane postures up in John's guard and throws a big left but John blocks it.
John wants to sweep here but Lane controlling him for the moment.
Lane trying to control the position from guard on top but John is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Todd Lane dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Todd Lane's cut.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



John moves into range and clinches up with Lane.

Lane gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
John controls Lane momentarily but Lane frees himself.

John is looking for a triangle but Lane pushes his legs off easily.
Lane has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

John is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Lane looking for a takedown.
John will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Lane up against the cage.

John breaks from the clinch.
Mike John seems to be getting the better of the standup.

That's one minute gone in the round.
John scores with a body shot.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lane.
Lane changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. John tries to avoid it but Lane manages to keep hold of a leg and drag John to the ground. John escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Todd Lane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
John fails to land with a series of punches.
Lane slaps away a takedown attempt from John, before circling back to the center of the mat.

John drives through and clinches with Lane against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Lane has clasped his hands together around John's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Lane is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt John will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
John controls the position for a moment.
Lane slows the pace down.
John is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Lane asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Lane wants to control but John is keeping him busy.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on John's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

John explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!
A head kick misses from John.

Lane closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Lane is taking a breather. John says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Lane is working for a kimura but John is defending it quite comfortably.

Lane is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
John regains full guard. Nicely done.
Lane in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
John trying to control the position.
Lane postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lane sitting in guard here, content to control.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Lane has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Todd Lane.
I think Lane has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
