Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Wong!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Lou da Vinci and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wong swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Reyes moves into the clinch.
Wong tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Reyes is trying to break the clinch but Wong is controlling him.
Wong effectively controlling the action here.
The crowd are getting on Wong's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.
Reyes jumps guard but Wong stands there with Reyes around his waist. Reyes gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Wong wants a takedown but no success here.

Wong gets control of Reyes's arms and successfully pulls guard. Wong will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Wong has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Wong scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Wong closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Reyes wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Wong pulls Reyes into guard.
Reyes wants to get up but he can't break Wong's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Wong has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Reyes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wong utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Reyes stands and steps away. Wong gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Wong drives through and clinches with Reyes against the cage.
Wong has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Reyes avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Reyes tries to break the clinch but Wong is controlling the position.
Wong is working for takedown but Reyes is calmly controlling the position for now.
Benny Reyes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe Wong.

Wong breaks from the clinch.

Wong closes the distance and pushes Reyes back into the cage.
Reyes gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Wong.

Wong pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Joe Wong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Reyes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Reyes stuffs the takedown attempt from Wong. Wong gets slowly back to his feet.
Wong scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.


It looks like Benny Reyes has been cut.
Horrible takedown by Reyes or perhaps it was just good defense by Wong which made him look bad.
Wong shoots in for a takedown but Reyes shows good takedown defense.
Wong looks winded!

Reyes closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Reyes lands in his opponent's guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Both fighters circling a little - Wong finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

Wong fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Wong is defended easily by Reyes.

Wong tries to stall but Reyes uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Reyes has had enough of the clinch but Wong keeps him there for the moment.
Reyes tries to pull guard but Wong holds him up against the cage and eventually Reyes drops back down to his feet.
Reyes tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Wong tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Reyes smiles and moves away.

Wong moves into range and clinches up with Reyes.

Reyes wants to break the clinch but can't.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Reyes tries to break free but Wong pushes him back against the cage.

Wong pulls guard effortlessly.
Wong looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Reyes trying to control the position from guard on top but Wong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Wong controls Reyes momentarily but Reyes frees himself.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wong throws a body kick despite being completely out of range

and Reyes counters by moving into the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Reyes is trying to push Wong away but Wong has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Wong showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Wong throws a right hand that Reyes ducks under and follows up with a left that Reyes also avoids with ease.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Wong. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
