PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Bohman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hide Reader (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reader is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Move. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Hide Reader was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, John Bohman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hide Reader!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Hirohito Nitta and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bohman throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Bohman shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Bohman was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Bohman blocks Reader's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Bohman wants to take his opponent's back but Reader doesn't allow it.
Reader is looking to get to half guard.
Reader is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Bohman avoids the attempt from Reader to control.
Reader takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Reader regains half guard.
Bohman thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Reader's head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Reader moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Bohman controlling from the top position.

Bohman drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Reader dives on top into guard.

Bohman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Bohman looking for a sweep. Not yet Bohman, not yet.
Reader pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Bohman is keeping the position for now.
Bohman is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Reader trying to control but Bohman is working from the bottom.

Reader decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Bohman, up you get!
Bohman throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Bohman is looking to clinch.
Reader keeps the fight on the outside.
Bohman shoots in for a double leg but Reader sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Reader swats away the attempt to clinch by Bohman.
Bohman fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Bohman is breathing heavily.

Bohman shoots in and drives through. Reader sprawls well.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Bohman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bohman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Reader as he jumps to the side.

Reader looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Bohman!
Reader wants to control the pace but Bohman is squirming around nicely.
Bohman working to try and regain half guard.
Reader lands a big shot there that rocks Bohman but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Bohman taking shots to the head.
Bohman keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Reader controlling from mount.

Reader jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Bohman is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Bohman and Reader has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Bohman takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Reader trying to control the action but Bohman is working from the bottom.

Reader stands up and we're back to a striking position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hide Reader dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Bohman tries to clinch up but Reader circles away and keeps his distance.

Bohman has closed the distance and engaged Reader in a clinch.
Reader gets underhooks to prevent Bohman's takedown attempt.
Bohman drops down looking for an ankle pick but Reader pulls his leg out and moves away.
Bohman connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.

Bohman shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reader wants to sweep here but Bohman controlling him for the moment.
Bohman trying to control but Reader is working from the bottom.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Reader controls Bohman momentarily but Bohman frees himself.
Bohman wants to stand but Reader has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Bohman passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Reader tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Bohman tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Bohman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Reader swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Reader moves out of range of the body kick.
Bohman with a poor takedown

and Reader counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Bohman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Reader trying to control but Bohman is working from the bottom.
Reader slips nicely into half guard.
Bohman wants to improve his position but Reader is controlling well.
Bohman is working hard here to advance position.

Reader drops an elbow to the side of Bohman's head.
Reader is keen to just control but Bohman is a slippery customer.
Bohman wants to get back to full guard.
Reader not doing much here.
Reader not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Bohman misses with a takedown attempt

and Reader counters with a takedown into side control.
Bohman is looking for a sweep.

Reader has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Reader landing strikes from the mount and Bohman is in trouble!
Reader lands a nice shot to the head.
Reader scoring with strikes but Bohman is staying in there.
Reader avoids the attempt from Bohman to control.
Reader controlling the position easily from mount.
Reader fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Reader with shots to the head and body - Bohman looks very uncomfortable down there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hide Reader showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Reader steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Bohman.
Bohman wants to clinch but Reader slips to the side

and Reader decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Bohman's guard.
Bohman is pulling down on Reader's head. It's preventing any offense from Reader, at least for the moment.
Reader trying to control the position from guard on top but Bohman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Reader trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Bohman avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Reader takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Reader decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Bohman, up you get!
John Bohman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bohman with a poor takedown

and Reader counters with a nice double leg into side control. Bohman won't be happy with that.
Bohman tries to improve position but can't.

Bohman sneaks out the side door and pushes Reader away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Bohman misses with a takedown
and Reader counters with a slapping leg kick.
Horrible takedown by Reader or perhaps it was just good defense by Bohman which made him look bad.
Bohman tries to clinch up

and Reader counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Bohman's guard now.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Bohman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Bohman manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Reader manages to get himself to full guard.

Reader is working an open guard so Bohman takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Bohman tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Reader counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Reader has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Reader is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Bohman is surviving well by controlling Reader's body position as best he can.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bohman working to try and regain half guard.
Reader tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Bohman wants to hold on but Reader pushes him away.

Reader looking to secure an arm triangle but Bohman defends it well.
Reader throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Bohman because Reader loaded up on that one.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Reader thowing shots but they're missing.
Bohman is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Reader goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Bohman is on top in guard.

Reader throws his legs up looking for a submission but Bohman uses it to pass to side control.
Bohman is looking to take a break and control but Reader is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Reader tries to get back to half guard but can't.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hide Reader comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Reader winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
